I originally wrote this with a focus on autoimmune challenges, recognizing that this lens shapes my perspective. My “thorn in the flesh” if you will.
That said, I firmly believe its message remains highly relevant even when applied broadly to any chronic illness or disease.
Living with chronic illness can feel disorienting, draining, and at times, incredibly isolating. Your body may seem unpredictable—flaring one day, quieter the next—and that uncertainty can weigh heavily on the heart.
❤️ But Scripture reminds us of a powerful truth: your body is not failing you—it is communicating, adapting, and doing its best to protect you. And more importantly, God sees every part of your journey.
God Is Near in the Hard Days
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
When your energy is low and your spirit feels weary, you are not distant from God—you are closer than you realize. He draws near in weakness, not away from it.
Grace for What You Can’t Control
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9
Chronic illness often teaches surrender—learning to rest, to slow down, to listen. God’s grace fills the gaps where your strength runs out. You are not expected to carry this alone.
Peace for an Overactive Nervous System
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled.”
John 14:27
Your body may feel inflamed or overstimulated, but God offers a peace that calms deeper than symptoms—peace that settles the soul and gently signals safety to the body.
Healing Is a Journey, Not a Moment
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3
Healing doesn’t always look instant or dramatic. Sometimes it looks like slow restoration, layer by layer—physical, emotional, spiritual. God is patient in His healing work.
Strength for Today Only
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow… Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:34
Chronic journeys teach us to live one day at a time. God meets you today—with today’s strength, today’s nourishment, today’s grace.
That “enjoy the journey” sign is in my home… and I think the key is not that we have to enjoy hardships. Nobody enjoys feeling poorly.
But having joy in the journey - because true joy doesn’t come from our circumstances or comfort.
A Final Word of Hope
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Psalm 139:14
Even in illness, your body remains wonderfully made. It is not broken beyond repair- one day I will be (and I pray you will be too!) fully healthy healed and whole in Jesus name!
But for today it’s worthy of compassion, care, and patience—from others, and from you.
