About a year and a half ago I was working with a Parenting Coach to help work through the temper tantrums my then 3.5 year old was having. At one point I said to my coach “ I am getting the feeling that my child’s behaviors are more about me than her.” And she said “ I am glad that you are noticing that”
It was at this point that I realized I had to do some work internally, on myself in order to help her regulate her own emotions. When I started looking at myself, my emotions and my thoughts I realized my exhaustion and stress were really impacting the way I was reacting to her tantrums leading to more power struggles and frustration for both of us.
So I really started being consistent with my Breathwork and yoga practices, working to calm my nervous system, relieve my stress, slow my mind and balance my own emotions. When I did this I realized I could hold compassionate space for her emotions, I stopped fighting her emotions and she stopped fighting me!
