Many of us live in a sympathetic state of fight 🥊 or flight 🛫. Our bodies are constantly switched onto survival mode and we experience the chronic effects of stress. If we don’t learn how to regulate this and activate our parasympathetic state, we are setting ourselves up to develop anxiety, depression, addiction as well as various digestive disorders 😱

Some ways to activate the parasympathetic state include:
✨ Breathing exercises
✨ Journaling
✨ Dancing
✨ Creative expression
✨ Walking
✨ Being out in nature
✨ Exercise
✨ Yoga
✨ Gargling
✨ Laughing
✨ Meditation
✨ Quality sleep
✨ Singing
✨ Spending time with loved ones

What do you do to ensure you stay mostly in the parasympathetic state? 🤔

"...pranayama [breath], asana [body], and mindfulness [mind] techniques as a means for healing the traumas and addictions that lead to incarceration."

The book that changed and continues to change so many lives. Here’s a snapshot of James and Ben Ballard, who did the illustrations for Yoga: A Path for Healing and Recovery — a resource meant to support the personal growth, self-healing, and yoga practice of incarcerated citizens. Since its first publication in 2010, some 23,000 copies have been shipped free of charge to prisoners in nearly every state in the US, and abroad.

Offering a methodology developed by James Fox after nearly two decades of teaching yoga in San Quentin Prison in California, Yoga: A Path for Healing and Recovery has been lauded by yoga teachers and practitioners worldwide for its clear, concise, and effective introduction to pranayama, asana, and mindfulness techniques as a means for healing the traumas and addictions that lead to incarceration.
Copies are available on the website prisonyoga.org where donations can be made as well in an effort to distribute more copies to individuals serving time.

PS ~ Ben Ballard, the gentleman pictured who illustrated the book, was recently released from prison.

"The real goal of Yoga is to understand oneself by making the mind clean and calm. Yoga is not just a set of physical postures, meditation, and breathing techniques. Yoga helps us to develop mental purity and serenity, which are both necessary to understand oneself. That is the purpose of Yoga and all the yogic practices have this aim in mind. The physical postures also help us to achieve mental serenity. Through physical serenity, through a healthy and relaxed body, we can easily experience mental peace.

The condition of the body has a lot to do with the condition of the mind. So we take care of the body by practicing certain postures, which are called asanas, and eating a clean diet. Asanas are different from exercises; they are poses that are held for a certain length of time, in a relaxed, steady way. Through the practice of asana, proper diet, and observing proper virtues the mind remains calm. These virtues are mentioned in almost every religious scripture." – Swami Satchidananda

Ah, yes. That old sacroiliac joint.

Ah, yes. That old sacroiliac joint.

The Posterior Oblique Subsystem
The posterior oblique subsystem is comprised of the gluteus maximus on one side of the body and the latissimus dorsi on the other side, with the thoracolumbar fascia between (as shown in the inset illustration). These structures operate synergistically with other groups of muscles, ligaments and fascia, particularly during rotational movements such as a golf swing.
The fibers of the gluteus maximus and opposite side latissimus dorsi run perpendicular to the sacroiliac joint. Co-contracting these two muscles can be used to tension the thoracolumbar fascia, thus stabilizing the sacroiliac joint.
Bird Dog is an excellent pose for strengthening the core and engaging the posterior oblique subsystem. A good cue for activating the latissimus dorsi muscle in this pose is to straighten the arm forward and then imagine pushing down with the hand against an immovable object (as shown with the dotted arrow). Alternatively, imagine pulling down on a rope with the forward hand. Combine this isometric contraction of the lats with engaging the glutes on the side of the lifted leg to augment the stabilizing effect on the SI joint.
