I think a lot of massage therapists worry that if their sessions feel similar, their guests will eventually get bored.

But one guest in particular sticks out to me, that I’ve seen every other week for the last two years, which shows me that these thoughts aren’t always true.

Of course, we make adjustments when needed. If something new pops up, we address it. But the overall structure of our sessions remains fairly consistent, and that’s exactly how he likes it.

The longer I practice, the more I realize that familiarity can be incredibly therapeutic. When the nervous system knows what to expect, it often feels safer. Trust develops on a deep level.

And I think that’s something we don’t talk about enough in this profession.

There seems to be a lot of pressure to constantly learn the newest technique, change our approach, or make every session completely different. While there’s certainly value in continuing to grow and evolve, I don’t believe consistency is something we should be afraid of.

I feel strongly that another massage therapist doing things differently doesn’t make your approach wrong.

One massage therapist may completely change their treatment plan every visit. Another may follow a familiar flow that has worked for years. One may love 60-minute sessions. Another may prefer longer appointments. One may use multiple tools. Another may use only their hands.

There is room for all of us🤍

The beauty of this profession is that there isn’t just one way to help people feel better.

If your clients continue choosing you, trusting you, and coming back year after year, don’t be so quick to assume you’re not doing enough.

Sometimes consistency is the treatment.

Sometimes the routine is what they’re coming for.

One thing I never want is for someone to miss out on getting care for themselves because childcare fell through.

Life is unpredictable. Babysitters get sick. Schedules change. Last minute situations happen.

While every circumstance is different, I want parents to know that The Shen Den is a space that understands real life. If bringing your little one means you can still receive the care you’ve been needing, I will always do my best to make that work.

Parents spend so much time caring for everyone else. You deserve care too.

Today I found myself thinking about something that still feels hard to wrap my head around.

People choose to come here.

They drive from all over Long Island (sometimes from out of state), rearrange schedules, leave work early, sit in traffic, find childcare (or bring their kids), and spend their hard earned money to make it to an appointment to The Shen Den to take time for themselves.

Not because I’m the only option, because I’m not.

There are countless talented massage therapists and wellness professionals out there.

And yet, everyday, there are people who continue to choose the space I’ve built.

This isn’t something I take lightly, and I know it’s God sent.

It’s something that humbles me everyday.

The trust people place in me, the stories they share, the vulnerability they bring into the treatment room, and the willingness to allow me to be part of their wellness journey is something I’ll never stop being grateful for.

To my guests: thank you.

And to my fellow massage therapists: I hope you take a moment to appreciate the fact that people choose you too.

In a world with endless options, someone decided you were worth their time, trust, and investment.

How beautiful is that?
