This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage reminds us of the importance of caring for and supporting one another in our communities every day.
At the Paterson Community Health Center, we are proud to provide compassionate care to those who need it most, including individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease. Through our Sickle Cell Disease Care Program, patients receive specialized care, such as appointment assistance, referrals, and social services.

Did you know sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder caused by specific genotypes?
A genotype is an organism’s genetic makeup. You receive certain genes from both your parents. If you have sickle cell genes, the most common sickle cell genotype is “Hemoglobin SS (HbSS).”

Is it possible to only inherit one sickle cell gene?
Yes, it is possible to only inherit one sickle cell gene, which gives you “Sickle Cell Trait (HbAS).” If you have Sickle Cell Trait, you may not experience symptoms, but you can still pass the gene down to your children.

At Paterson Community Health Center, we offer specialized care for patients living with sickle cell disease through our Sickle Cell Disease Care Program. If you or a loved one has sickle cell disease or you want to be tested because you think you may have it or a relative has it, call (973) 278-2600 to schedule an appointment.

On February 12, 2026, Paterson Community Health Center once again partnered with the Community Care Food & Clothing Pantry to host a special grocery giveaway focused on heart health for patients enrolled in PCHC’s Sickle Cell Disease Care Program. The Community Care Food & Clothing Pantry pulled out all the stops to create a welcoming and engaging experience for our patients with sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait. Participants were able to select from a variety of groceries while also enjoying an engaging food experience that included a selection of delicious soups in a variety of flavors, a colorful make-your-own salad bar filled with fresh ingredients, and a refreshing juice bar. A flavorful stir-fry was also featured providing patients with the opportunity to see healthy cooking in action.

🌤️ Even when it is warm, it is important to stay protected! 🌤️
The forecast says it is going to be warmer for the next week, which means we are going to be spending a little more time outdoors. So, why not keep up to date on your vaccinations now that we are going to be out and about more often? 💉
Vaccines help protect against preventable illnesses and keep our community healthy, especially as seasonal illnesses can still spread.
Paterson Community Health Center provides vaccines for both adults and children! For more information or to make an appointment, call (973) 790-6594 or (973) 278-2600.
