With regard to vaccination in pregnancy I urge you to speak with your doctor and make an informed decision. The vaccines were not specifically tested in pregnant women but are believed to be safe. Some women in the trials conceived after receiving the vaccine and there was no increase in problems with baby or mother. The genetic material the vaccine is made from does not get into the baby’s cells. There is a real risk to not vaccinating pregnant women that are at high risk of contracting infection (e.g., health care workers) and those who if they contract the disease may have the worst courses and outcomes (e.g, patients with pre-existing illnesses.) There may be benefit to encouraging vaccination of all pregnant women. Those that trial vaccines are being encouraged to include pregnant and lactating women. Please talk to your health care provider and continue to protect yourself with masks, social distancing, and proper hand washing. Happy and safe holidays to all.
