Are you taking your thyroid medication in a way that allows it to be absorbed properly?

A few simple habits matter:

Take your thyroid medication on an empty stomach with water only.

Wait approximately 1 hour before eating or having coffee or tea.

Calcium, iron, and certain other minerals can interfere with absorption, so they should generally be taken at least 4 hours apart from thyroid medication.

Consistency is also important. Taking your medication under similar conditions each day can help produce more predictable absorption and thyroid lab results.

For some patients, bedtime dosing may also be an option when the medication is taken several hours after the last meal.

Educational content only. Do not change your thyroid medication dose or schedule without discussing it with your healthcare professional.

Could your supplements be changing your laboratory results?

Three commonly used supplements may affect testing:

• Biotin can interfere with certain thyroid, hormone, cardiac, and other laboratory tests.
• Iron taken shortly before an iron panel may temporarily raise serum iron and influence interpretation.
• Creatine may increase creatinine, even when kidney function is normal.

This does not mean these supplements are necessarily harmful. It means your clinician needs to know exactly what you take—and when you last took it—to interpret your results accurately.

Before your next blood draw, bring a complete list of your supplements and ask which ones should be paused and for how long. Never discontinue a prescription medication unless your healthcare provider instructs you to do so.

Save and share this important laboratory reminder.

Have you ever eaten oatmeal, quinoa, or sweet potatoes because they’re considered “healthy,” but wondered what they actually do to your blood sugar?

The answer can be very different from person to person.

A continuous glucose monitor, or CGM, allows you to see how your glucose responds throughout the day—not only to food, but also to stress, sleep, and physical activity.

It can help identify whether certain meals cause larger glucose rises, how quickly your glucose returns toward baseline, and whether changing the balance of protein, healthy fats, fiber, or carbohydrates improves your response.

At DNP Wellness, the CGM device is included at no additional cost with your initial metabolic consultation.

We use your individual glucose data to help build a personalized metabolic strategy rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all diet.

📍 Serving Rockland County, Bergen County & surrounding communities.

If you want to better understand your own glucose patterns, schedule your initial metabolic consultation.

Did you know that after menopause, many women can have estrogen levels that are as low as—or even lower than—those seen in men?

That comparison helps illustrate just how significant the hormonal transition of menopause can be.

Estrogen isn’t only a reproductive hormone. It has effects throughout the body, including the bones, brain, cardiovascular system, muscles, skin, metabolism, and genitourinary tissues.

That’s why menopause care should involve more than simply managing hot flashes. It’s also an opportunity to look at bone health, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, sleep, and overall quality of life.

Menopause is a normal transition. But that doesn’t mean women should be expected to simply tolerate symptoms or ignore the health changes that can accompany it.

You can have insulin resistance before your blood sugar is officially high.

Early on, the body may compensate by producing more insulin to keep glucose within the “normal” range. That means fasting glucose—or even A1C—may look reassuring while insulin levels are already elevated.

Over time, the pancreas may struggle to keep up, and blood sugar can begin to rise.

This is why metabolic health should be evaluated using the full clinical picture—not a single glucose result.

At DNP Wellness in Pearl River, NY, we take an individualized approach to metabolic health.

🐟 Are you actually getting enough omega-3?

Many fish oil supplements advertise a large number on the front—but that number may represent total fish oil, not the amount of EPA and DHA you’re receiving.

For general health, approximately 500 mg of combined EPA and DHA daily is often used as a baseline. Higher amounts may be considered for specific metabolic or inflammatory goals—but the appropriate dose depends on your health history, diet, medications, and laboratory findings.

Before buying fish oil:

✅ Check the Supplement Facts panel
✅ Add the EPA and DHA amounts together
✅ Choose a quality-tested product
✅ Take it with a meal containing fat
✅ Ask your clinician before using higher doses—especially if you take blood-thinning medication or have an upcoming procedure

At DNP Wellness in Pearl River, NY, we help patients create personalized supplement and metabolic plans based on their individual needs—not generic recommendations.

Cholesterol isn’t the enemy—but the way it travels through your bloodstream matters.

Your body needs cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D, bile acids, and healthy cell membranes. The concern develops when too many ApoB-containing particles circulate for too many years, allowing more of them to enter and become trapped inside artery walls.

ApoB is important, but it is only one part of cardiovascular risk. Blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, insulin resistance, inflammation, and elevated lipoprotein(a) can all accelerate plaque formation.

The goal isn’t to eliminate cholesterol. It’s to reduce your lifetime exposure to atherogenic particles while addressing the other factors affecting your arteries.

At DNP Wellness in Pearl River, NY, we look beyond a standard cholesterol panel to understand the complete metabolic and cardiovascular picture.

Why does weight suddenly feel harder to manage in your 40s—even when your habits haven’t changed?

During perimenopause, shifts in estrogen, insulin sensitivity, sleep, stress, and muscle mass can all influence metabolism and body composition.

That’s why “just eat less” often doesn’t address the full picture. Understanding your hormonal and metabolic health can help you take a more personalized approach.

At DNP Wellness in Pearl River, NY, we look beyond the number on the scale.

Follow for practical, evidence-based guidance on hormones, metabolism, and healthy aging.

A normal B12 result doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Serum B12 measures what’s circulating in your blood, but it may not fully reflect how well your cells are actually using vitamin B12—especially if you’re already taking supplements.

That’s where methylmalonic acid (MMA) can be helpful. When functional B12 is insufficient, MMA can rise, sometimes even when the serum B12 level looks normal.

If you’re dealing with unexplained fatigue, numbness or tingling, brain fog, or memory changes, it may be worth discussing whether MMA testing makes sense as part of a broader evaluation.
