Yesterday I made lemonade. 🍋

Clearly I was still in vacation mode because I showed up with sunglasses on my head and did not even realize they were there.

I had the privilege of speaking to a wonderful group of ladies at Wilcox Lane Senior Apartments about empowerment at medical appointments. I brought my laptop, a prepared presentation, and even doughnuts.

What I did not expect to find... lemons.

The HDMI cord fit my computer perfectly, except the other end was unusable. I moved the TV stand away from the wall trying to access the ports when one participant laughed and said,
“Doc, you move furniture too?!?”

Then I opened my laptop and found about 50 internet options but not a single password.

So we made lemonade.

We moved chairs into a circle, passed out the cheat sheets, and had a wonderful conversation filled with shared experiences, empowerment, laughter, and ideas for better medical appointments ahead.

I called it my “fireside chat” without the fire. 😊

Sometimes the best connections happen when things do not go according to plan.

This morning was spent… on hold.

First, 24 minutes with the provider’s main 800 number.
While waiting, I was told I could use the online chat instead — perfect… or so I thought.

I was connected to the wrong facility.
Then transferred to the “right” person… who couldn’t answer my question.
I was given yet another number to call.

Meanwhile, the hold music finally ended — only for me to repeat my story, get transferred again… and be disconnected.

Another call back.
Another “different” extension.
And finally — the opportunity to leave a message.

45 minutes… just to ask a question about an upcoming 15-minute procedure.

This is the reality patients and families face every day.

I have celebrated 33 Doctor's Days in my life, but today was my favorite.

During my journey, some Doctor’s Days were filled with the routine: ear infections and everyday care.

Others called for emergent intubations and life-saving decisions.

Still others were spent post-call, fighting to stay awake on the drive home 36 hours after the day began.

But today, I’m especially grateful.

Grateful for a Doctor’s Day that was also a daughter's day. One without urgency or exhaustion. One where I was a doctor AND a daughter, grateful for the gift of spending Doctor's day with my dad.

Whether you are newly matched or a veteran doctor, Happy Doctor's Day-I hope today was your favorite.
