There's no shame in calling, and there's no medal for waiting. The question is which list you're on.
Wait-it-out: low-grade fever under 101 with no other red flags. New muscle ache after activity or stress. The kind of symptom that usually peaks and breaks on its own within a day.
Call us today: chest tightness, especially with shortness of breath, sweating, or arm pain (please don't drive yourself). The worst headache of your life, or one that hits in seconds, especially with confusion or weakness: that's an ER call!
Here are ten more situations that come up all the time:
1. Cough lingering past 3 weeks, or any cough bringing up blood: Call.
2. Sore throat with high fever, white patches, or trouble swallowing: Call. Plain scratchy throat with a cold: Wait.
3. New rash spreading fast, with fever, or with swelling of the lips or face: Call now. Localized itchy patch: Wait a few days.
4. Diarrhea past 48 hours, or any blood in the stool: Call. One bad day with a stomach bug: Wait and hydrate.
5. Vomiting that won't let you keep water down for more than 12 hours: Call.
6. New shortness of breath at rest, or with mild activity that didn't bother you last week: Call.
7. Swelling in one leg, especially with calf pain or warmth: Call same day. Could be a clot.
8. New, severe abdominal pain that doesn't ease in a few hours, or pain with fever or vomiting: Call.
9. Burning with urination, blood in urine, or back/flank pain with fever: Call. UTIs don't wait it out well.
10. Mental health: thoughts of harming yourself or feeling unsafe: Call us or 988, today. Not later.
When you're not sure, that's also a reason to call. We'd rather hear from you early than late. 850-848-9500
