**The Photo I Never Turned In**

Sometimes overeating costs us more than our health.

Years ago, our church was putting together a church directory and families were invited to have professional photos taken. We had ours done, and the photographer did a good job. But when I saw the pictures, all I could see was my weight.

At the time, I was nearly 100 pounds overweight. I hated how my face looked in the photos. The photographer kindly offered to adjust the lighting, but there was no changing the fact that I was carrying far more weight than I wanted to be.

I was so embarrassed that I never submitted the photo.

At the time, I couldn't imagine putting that picture in a church directory for everyone to see.

Looking back, I don't regret not submitting the photo. What I regret is not doing something about my weight sooner. I wish I had gotten help before the shame became so overwhelming.

It was a loss not to have that photo as a memory of our family during that season of life. But the bigger loss was living with so much shame that I felt I needed to hide.

Maybe you can relate.

If your struggle with food or weight has left you feeling discouraged, embarrassed, or stuck, please don't wait as long as I did. There is no shame in asking for help. In fact, asking for help may be one of the bravest things you'll ever do.

Why do we turn to food when we're stressed, lonely, overwhelmed, or discouraged?

In this week's podcast, Tony and I talk about the deeper reasons behind emotional eating and comfort eating. We also discuss why isolation often makes things worse and what we can learn from King David about bringing our emotions honestly to God.

If you've ever used food to cope with difficult feelings, I think this episode will encourage you.

When life hurts, food can start looking like a solution.

Not because you're weak.

Not because you don't know better.

But because food is quick, familiar, and always available.

The problem is that food can distract us from pain for a few minutes, but it can't heal it.

God can.

If you're going through a difficult season right now, don't carry it alone.

Talk to God.

Talk to someone you trust.

Stay connected.

Isolation and overeating often grow together.

Healing usually begins when we bring our struggles into the light.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." — Galatians 6:2

“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16 (NIV)

With just a word, God created all things. This is so amazing! And...the God who made all things can be trusted with all things. Even though evil can happen, we can trust in God and not be afraid. His promise to us is that He will be with us and help us. We can trust this absolutely.

Dear Lord, thank You that You are trustworthy and true. Help me to remember to turn to You in all things and not be afraid. Send Your angels to protect me. Help me to not turn to food in times of anxiousness. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Step 6 isn't about becoming perfect.

It's about becoming willing.

Many of us can see the behaviors that keep us stuck—turning to food for comfort, holding onto resentment, making excuses, or trying to control everything ourselves.

The challenge isn't always recognizing the problem.

The challenge is becoming willing to let God change us.

Sometimes we want freedom from the consequences, but we're not quite ready to surrender the habit itself.

Step 6 invites us to open our hands and say, "God, I'm willing. Help me become the person You want me to be."

Basically, the point is… lasting recovery begins when we stop fighting God’s work in our lives and become willing to let Him change us.

Be blessed and joyful this weekend.

Remember: food is important for good health, but it's not the main event.

Enjoy the people, family, conversations, laughter, worship, rest, and simple moments God gives you.

Basically, the point is… there is so much more to enjoy in life than food.

Have a wonderful weekend! ❤️

One thing I’m being reminded of on vacation this week is that food is not the main event — people are.

Tony and I met our sons and their families at a park yesterday and later went out to eat together. We’re meeting more friends and family for meals this week too, but the focus is staying on the relationships, conversations, laughter, and time together — not the food.

Pictured here are a few of our grandkids playing kickball while waiting for the next player to come up and kick the ball.

Yes, we need to eat.
But we do not need to overeat.

We’ve also been enjoying other things besides restaurants:
❤️ Attending church while on vacation
❤️ Spending time with family
❤️ Relaxing at the hotel pool
❤️ Making memories together

Sometimes we unintentionally build an entire vacation around food. But there is so much more to enjoy in life than constantly thinking about what we’re going to eat next.

Basically, the point is… freedom grows when food stops being the center of everything.

Today on Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who gave their lives serving our country and the families who carry that loss every day.

Tony and I are visiting family in Minnesota this week, and this holiday has been a good reminder that life is really about people, relationships, faith, gratitude, and the time we have together.

We’ve enjoyed meals with family and friends, but we’re also staying mindful and taking care of our health while we travel:
✅ 3 meals a day
✅ No binge foods
✅ Simple healthy foods when possible
✅ Focusing on connection more than food

Basically, the point is… moments with the people we love matter far more than overeating ever will.

Wishing you a meaningful and peaceful Memorial Day today.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (ESV)

Here, Jesus is preparing His disciples for when He leaves them physically. He says they will not be alone, that God is sending the Holy Spirit to live within them. That promise is for us also. He lives within us and comforts us and helps us. We don’t have to do this alone.

Dear Lord, thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to live within us. Thank You for the teaching and encouragement You bring in our times of need and always. Amen.

🌟 Step 5: Finding Freedom Through Confession 🌟

"Knowing that we are forgiven and saved by grace, we confessed our sins to God and a trusted friend."

Step 5 is a powerful step toward freedom and healing. When we confess our struggles to God and share them with someone we trust, we experience the grace and release that comes from being fully known and fully loved.

It’s not about shame; it’s about letting go of the burdens we’ve carried for too long. God’s grace meets us in our honesty, and His love helps us move forward.

Once we feel the peace of God, we can begin to experience the healing that leads to true freedom from overeating.

Take a moment today to reflect: Is there something weighing on your heart that you need to bring to God? Is there a trusted friend or mentor you can turn to for support?

Let’s walk this journey together. 💛
