When patients arrive in the Emergency Department with eye trauma, sudden vision loss, or painful infections, a clear and detailed view of the eye is essential.

Thanks to donor support, we were able to provide a new slit lamp, restoring an essential tool in a clinician’s diagnostic toolbelt.

“This slit lamp has already changed how we care for patients with eye emergencies. It’s fast, reliable, and gives us the clarity we need to make critical decisions. We’re so grateful to have it, and to the donors who helped make it possible. Thank you!” - Dr. Kathryn Hoyner, Emergency Department

Training and education are crucial to providing high-quality healthcare in our community.

Recently, the McLaren Northern Michigan trauma team led a training for first responders in Otsego County. McLaren Northern Michigan Trauma Program Manager Katie Sharp, MSN, RN, CCRN, shared:

“As a level 2 ACS verified trauma center, we serve as a leader in trauma care for our region. Providing public and professional trauma education, such as Stop The Bleed training, is fundamental to that mission. The training and life-saving equipment we provided the Otsego County and Vanderbilt Volunteer Fire Departments demonstrates how our trauma program collaborated with Petoskey Public Safety, Emmet County EMS, and the Foundation to protect the lives and safety of people in our catchment area.”

In addition to the training, all fire trucks and stations were outfitted with Stop the Bleed kits, generously funded by gifts to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation.

We extend a special thanks to the teams that participated in the training and to our donors for supporting these important partnerships!

Nurses are at the heart of patient care, serving as caregivers, educators, advocates, and problem solvers every day. Their compassion, skill, and dedication make a lasting impact on patients and families throughout our community.

As we reflect on Nurses Week 2026, we want to thank the incredible nurses of McLaren Northern Michigan for the care they provide each day. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to recognize our nursing team with energizing snacks and self-care gift bags as a small token of appreciation.

We are grateful for our nurses and for the donors who help us celebrate the people who make exceptional care possible.
