⚠️WARNING⚠️ Just because a drug is “well tolerated” or sold over-the-counter or you don’t have any apparent side effects or a doctor recommended it… doesn’t mean it’s 100% safe.
Although leaky gut or intestinal permeability is essentially the new guy in town for conventional docs, some don’t even acknowledge it.
“So here’s a pill to fix things” 👨⚕️📝 when it can actually make things worse with prolonged use😡
🍕Acid-reducers: With less stomach acid, you dont digest your food well enough. You absorb less nutrients and larger, undigested food particles damage the gut barrier.
🗓️Oral birth control: You have a whole microbiome called the estroblome that breaks down hormones. Synthetic hormones shut off your natural hormones and give you a fake menstrual cycle. This process disrupts your natural estroblome/microbiome, weakening your gut barrier.
😊☹️ Antidepressants: The majority of your serotonin and dopamine are made in the gut then sent to the brain. Antidepressants often help with symptoms in the beginning but eventually disrupt your gut-brain axis, leading to less natural production of happy brain signals.
🦠Antibiotics: This one is well-recognized 👏🏻 where you’re also killing off good bacteria in your gut along with the infection you’re trying to treat. Antibiotics can throw off your natural microbiome for 6-12 months after one 7-day course.
🤕NSAIDs: Easily bought over-the-counter and easily over-used. They reduce inflammation and pain but actually cause inflammation in the gut when used longterm. Longterm use includes 3-5 times per week, one dose per day everyday, 14+ days, keeping a value sized bottle in your medicine cabinet 😅.
💚These drugs are essential in many cases and you don’t have to avoid them when you absolutely need them. Assess how long you’ve been using them and is it time to take a step back? It is good to be informed of the risks and take action to counter those risks. Focus on holistic gut health practices like eating whole foods, prebiotics aka fiber 🍇🍎🥦🫑, probiotics, breathwork or meditate 5-10 minutes a day, filtered water, and joyful movement 🤸♀️💚
