🍂 Healthy food can still feel like comfort food.

Fall brings plenty of seasonal ingredients that can make meals warm, flavorful, and nutrient-rich especially important for older adults.

Instead of focusing on what seniors shouldn’t eat, fill the kitchen with foods they can genuinely look forward to: baked apples, creamy squash soup, oatmeal topped with fruit, roasted sweet potatoes, hearty lentil dishes, and other seasonal favorites. 🍎🥣

For older adults who have difficulty chewing, softer preparations like roasting, mashing, simmering, or baking can make some foods easier to enjoy.

💡 Individual nutrition needs can vary, especially with certain health conditions or medications, so families should follow recommendations from their healthcare provider when needed.

💙 October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the talents, skills, and contributions people with disabilities bring to workplaces and communities.

Yet barriers to meaningful employment remain. According to The Arc, in July 2026, 38.3% of working-age people with disabilities were employed, compared with 75% of people without disabilities.

These figures cover disabilities broadly, including difficulties with hearing, vision, cognition, mobility, self-care, and independent living. Mental health and chronic conditions, including autoimmune conditions, may also be represented when they cause the functional difficulties measured by the survey.

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, barriers can include hiring bias, limited access to training, and a lack of appropriate workplace support.

💙 Inclusive workplaces give people opportunities to contribute their skills, earn fair wages, build connections, and pursue their goals.

🥶 “My hands are always cold.” Is that just part of getting older?

Older adults can become more sensitive to colder temperatures, so occasional cold hands or feet may simply be the body’s response to a cool environment or being inactive for a while.
But persistent coldness shouldn’t automatically be blamed on aging.

Cold hands or feet can sometimes be connected to circulation changes, peripheral neuropathy, or underlying conditions. Peripheral neuropathy may be associated with diabetes, certain autoimmune disorders, and some vitamin deficiencies.

What matters is noticing what’s new or different for your loved one. If coldness is persistent, affects only one side, or comes with numbness, tingling, pain, swelling, sores, weakness, or significant skin color changes, talk with a healthcare provider.

💙 Families and caregivers often notice the little changes first. Paying attention can help your loved one get the right support sooner.
