We do not see patients under the age of 18. Simply put, functional medicine is the future of health care. Many traditional health care providers treat the symptoms of an illness, usually with pharmaceuticals. Disease is often treated as something pre-ordained, a result of genetics or environment. No attempt is made to find a root cause of a problem nor do most physicians consider more nuanced health care practices like diet and lifestyle management. As Dr. Mark Hyman, the president of the Institute for Functional Medicine, noted, this country doesn’t “have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system.”

Functional medicine involves understanding the origins of chronic disease, in the hopes of preventing its onset. If that’s not possible, doctors who practice functional medicine seek more thorough and innovative ways to treat complex disease.

Enjoyment of life can still be balanced with good health practices. One does not have to cancel out the other. Discipline does not mean the absence of spontaneity and fun. And yes, having systems and habits to keep you on track and keep you feeling your best are really important. But like everything some people just take this to such an extreme that the goal of living a fulfilled enjoyable life is obscured by the goal of extreme adherence to rules and regulations. Quite honestly I’m not here for this and after working with patients for 28 years, I will tell you that the individuals that were able to prioritize enjoyment and their life along with keeping a balanced health system were the ones that truly flourished. This is the core of my current midlife coaching strategy.
I believe that we should all be able to curate a life that suits us. We are the ones who get to pick and choose what belongs and what is important to us. This is truly designing a life that you do not want to escape from.

For someone who always just worked harder and things happened- this is a tough lesson. I know many of the women I work with feel the same way. It’s frustrating especially in midlife when you feel like you are doing everything right but things aren’t happening. Maybe you don’t have the answers about what to do with your life next. Maybe don’t know what the next step is, or you feel like you are trying everything and getting nowhere.
Sometimes letting go of the wheel for once and letting your intuition and your values guide you is the best thing to do.
It’s hard but often that’s when the clarity comes.

I have found that when people want to have a long standing improvement in their life, either it’s fitness, nutrition, stress, relationships etc. The best thing to do is to take an inventory on why you want change in the first place - usually the pain points are the biggest triggers.
Usually the reason needs to come from you not someone else- those don’t generally hold up.
Also there are many ways to reach a goal and they don’t have to be what everyone else is doing.
Maybe you are focusing too much on the wrong things. Maybe the changes that really are going to move the needle are not the sexy ones, the easy ones. They are complex, uncomfortable and messy but those are usually the ones we keep passing over because they are hard.
Lastly not all change needs to be a grind or some harsh restrictive thing. Often it’s bringing in more fun, joy, space and self compassion that starts to make our lives and us feel better

What is one thing you’re ready to let go of to make room for something better?
I’ve spent the last three weeks purging, painting, cleaning and slowly moving. I’ve had almost no time for anything else. I’m currently living out of boxes and because my furniture is still in my other house while, it’s up for sale. I’m limited to a desk a chair and a mattress. I feel like I’m back in college.
At the same time, this has been an exercise in reviewing what is absolutely necessary for me in building my next phase in life. This move was an intentional part one of the process and it hasn’t been easy.
But it’s the first step in curating a life that’s more intentional and simpler. With more time to do the things I want to do- create things, build my business, get outside, read and travel.
It’s not about being a minimalist or being frugal or restrictive. It’s quite the opposite. It’s about finding more time and more freedom.
Sometimes the path forward starts by creating space. I”ll be unpacking this house for awhile, but I’m also unpacking a new chapter. And I’m excited to share what I’m learning along the way.

What are some of your biggest life mistakes and is there a theme? I’d love to hear.
Midlife for me is a time of throwing off the shackles of expectations of other people, but also being very intentional about listening to my intuition, but then acting on it without any remorse. I used to think that taking care of myself first was selfish. I was also taught early on that bringing attention to myself was also unattractive. This led me to not away, standing up for myself, not promoting myself when I could’ve and even not accepting compliments when they were definitely due. I did this for decades. I guess it took burning out and my business shutting down, leaving me in a place where I could ask the question what the hell went wrong? Now I did a lot of things right however there were so many times where I didn’t take care of myself first I’ve realized this is not selfish at all and I make sure to tell all of my midlife women clients that self-love, self compassion, acting on your own intuition and taking care of oneself first is absolutely necessary. This is the only way that you can truly be of service in the world, live an authentic life and give back to the things and the people that you love.

What are your biggest life mistakes? Do you notice a theme?
I’m trying to use any mistakes in regret of my life to teach me something moving forward and one thing that I know in midlife is that I always need to listen and take action on my intuition and never apologize for doing so the other thing is always take care of myself first this is not greedy or selfish. Although women are always taught to believe that if they take care of themselves first that somehow they are both of those things.
Meanwhile, women get burned out by over giving, lacking their own self love self compassion, and putting everyone else first. It’s practically burned into our DNA because so many of us were raised with these messages. The true reality is that the only way we can make a big impact and be kind and generous of service is if we take care of ourselves first.
