A new multisociety expert consensus statement published in JVIR highlights the urgent need for enhanced radiation protection practices across cardiovascular and interventional specialties.

Developed through collaboration among SCAI - The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography, Heart Rhythm Society, the Society of Interventional Radiology, and the Society for Vascular Surgery, the statement provides guidance to help create safer care environments for patients and healthcare professionals.

As Men’s Health Month concludes, JVIR highlights research that reflects an ongoing evolution in prostate cancer treatment toward more targeted, image-guided approaches.

A new open-access study evaluates MR-guided transrectal focal laser ablation (FLA) for localized low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer.

This technique represents part of a broader effort to refine treatment strategies that prioritize both disease control and preservation of quality of life.

In this prospective cohort of 10 patients, MR-guided FLA demonstrated:

- High technical success
- Encouraging short-term local tumor control
- Generally preserved urinary and sexual function outcomes

While still early in development, these findings contribute to a growing evidence base supporting focal, organ-preserving approaches in carefully selected patients.

📣 JVIR article highlight: Ultrasound-guided direct percutaneous thyroid artery embolization followed by microwave ablation for a benign thyroid nodule.

Clinicalâť“: Can a fully ultrasound-guided, single-session embolization + ablation approach treat hypervascular benign thyroid nodules without fluoroscopy/DSA?

🔑 Insight: A technical case describes ultrasound-guided embolization of thyroid feeding arteries immediately followed by microwave ablation in a benign hypervascular nodule.

Why it matters🕵️: Introduces a novel minimally invasive, ultrasound-only combination approach that may expand treatment options for select thyroid nodules.

How far can cement migration travel after vertebroplasty?

In this month's Images in IR, imaging reveals a rare and dramatic finding: A continuous cement cast extending from the treated vertebral body through the azygos venous system and into the right side of the heart.

The accompanying images provide a striking anatomical visualization and important lessons on recognition, evaluation and management of vertebroplasty-related complications.

What does occupational protection in interventional radiology look like in 2026?

The updated joint guideline from CIRSE - Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the Society for Interventional Radiology reflects a growing understanding that workplace safety extends beyond fluoroscopic radiation exposure alone.

The revised recommendations address radiation protection, ergonomics, and other occupational risks while providing practical guidance for physicians, nurses, technologists, medical physicists, and the broader IR team.
