Check out Soil for the Soul: A Fireside Chat! It will be moderated by Dr. Jamie Green from the Department of Agriculture and feature Christa Barfield and Dr. Bill McKinney.

He was formally recognized at the 6th Annual TCB Pep Rally on Friday, October 10, attended by Mayor Cherelle Parker, Managing Director Carlton Williams, Acting Commerce Director Karen Fegely, Sanitation Commissioner Crystal Jacob Shipman, and Deputy Commerce Directors Denis Murphy and Yvonne Boye.

As the weather cools, extreme heat may feel less urgent—but its impacts, and the role of neighborhood planning and design in Philadelphia, remain central to ongoing conversations about environmental and climate justice. This video explores how heat, zoning and land use, and tree canopy and shade shape conditions across Philadelphia. Where you live can determine how much heat and other cumulative environmental burdens you experience. Differences in shade, development patterns, and zoning create significant disparities in neighborhood exposure and public‑health outcomes during extreme heat. The Philadelphia Climate Justice Collective, of which the Overbrook Environmental Education Center is a partner—is calling for a Right to Cooling: a life‑saving protection to ensure every Philadelphia resident can stay safe during extreme heat.

Join us for a bus tour exploring how history, green infrastructure, and conservation can help reimagine West Philly neighborhoods beyond illegal dumping, blight, brownfields, vacant lots, and the growing pressure of data centers and other polluting land-use proposals. Shaped by research from students at Jefferson University, Villanova University, Temple University, and the Overbrook Environmental Education Center, the tour will visit West Fairmount Park, the Overbrook Center, and sites of historical and environmental significance along the Lancaster Avenue industrial corridor.
