PHILLY ADAPT: WE’RE STILL HERE. AND WE’RE STILL NOT ASKING PERMISSION TO BE INCLUDED.

Remember when Philly ADAPT showed up at Christmas Village last year because disabled people couldn't independently shop?

Apparently the response was:

If disabled people demand access, make the booths inaccessible to EVERYONE.

We are disgusted.

An email sent to vendors by the company operating Christmas Village and the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market calls the accessibility problem an “alleged issue,” dismisses disabled advocates as a “very small group,” and reduces our demand for independence to something we simply “do not like.”

Let's be crystal clear: OUR CIVIL RIGHTS ARE NOT AN “ALLEGED ISSUE.”

We don't want special treatment. We want equal access.

And don't you dare blame disabled people for restrictions created because we demanded accessibility.

Philadelphia approved these markets. The City has a responsibility here, too. We want to know how language this blatantly ableist made it through the process and into an email to vendors.

Last year, Philly ADAPT showed up. We can show up again.

Disabled people will not be treated as an inconvenience because accessibility requires planning or effort.

WE ARE NOT THE PROBLEM.
ACCESSIBILITY IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
INACCESSIBILITY IS THE PROBLEM.

Fix it.
