FIMRC: Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children

FIMRC: Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children FIMRC was founded in 2002 with the mission of improving access to medical care for underprivileged children around the world.

FIMRC is a global nonprofit organization committed to improving healthcare access in medically underserved communities via clinical services, public health education, and community outreach. Today, our reach has grown to encompass project sites in nine different countries offering a range of clinical services and health education for children and families. As part of our mission, we are dedicated

to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world public health initiatives with volunteer opportunities and virtual fellowships that connect participants with cultural experiences around the globe. These hands-on programs give individuals the opportunity to play a vital role in addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of our time. FIMRC is made up of more than 3,000 dedicated staff and volunteers worldwide. Our organization is generously supported by the thousands of globally-minded individuals who contribute their time, resources, and donations to our programs every year.

Last week, volunteers spent the day painting our clinic in Alajuelita, Costa Rica 🇨🇷🎨🤩

MedLife Movement is a nonprofit that partners with low-income communities in Latin America and Africa to improve access to medicine, education, and community development. They covered the materials and sent 13 volunteers who worked all morning to refresh the space inside and out.

But this was about more than fresh walls…

For many of the people we serve, including immigrants, refugees, and economically disadvantaged families, our clinic is one of the few places where they can receive healthcare. 🩺

A cared-for space sends a message before anyone says a word: you are welcome here, you matter, and you deserve to receive care with dignity. 💙

Thank you, MedLife, for supporting our clinic not only with resources, but with your volunteers time and energy!

🇵🇪 Recap: A week in Huancayo with volunteers from the University of Pittsburgh 🩺✨

🧑‍⚕️ They joined routine consultations at Cocharcas Health Center and led a handwashing campaign.

🏥 They rotated through Hospital Daniel Alcides Carrión, supporting vital sign checks for patients in the trauma unit and shadowing procedures in the operating room.

🩺 They took part in a free health campaign in Sapallanga, where they helped with patient intake, blood pressure, glucose checks, and oral health station for around 40 patients.

🧒 They spent time with children at El Rosario shelter, leading games and a workshop on the respiratory system. They also supported the delivery of toys, toothbrushes, and clothing donations.

Thank you to our University of Pittsburgh volunteers for bringing your skills and energy to our mission in Peru. 💙

🇵🇪 This is the side of volunteering in Peru you don’t always see!

In Huancayo, volunteers also get to experience the culture, landscapes, food, traditions, and everyday beauty of the Andes. Mountain views, local markets, new foods, and moments that make the trip feel unforgettable. 🦙⛰️🌸

Because global health is also about understanding the place, the people, and the culture around you. 🩺

When you volunteer with FIMRC in Peru, you don’t just gain hands-on experience. You take home memories, perspective, and stories you’ll keep for a long time. 💙

Costa Rica is calling! 🇨🇷🌿

One of the places where FIMRC works is Alajuelita, Costa Rica, where our community clinic supports families through primary care & health education. 🩺

As a volunteer, you get to step into that work alongside local staff. Learning, helping, and seeing what community-centered healthcare looks like up close.

And outside the clinic? Waterfalls, views, local culture, new food, new people, and the kind of moments that make the whole experience stay with you. ✈️🌎

If Costa Rica has been on your mind, this might be your sign.

🇺🇬 ✨ Tea Sweeney, a Global Public Health and Africana Studies student at Binghamton University, spent four weeks in Uganda through our Summer International Health Fellowship (SIHF).

During her time at our Bududa project site, Tea had the opportunity to witness a live birth, visit local clinics and hospitals, and gain a deeper understanding of rural healthcare and global health systems.

She shared: “Volunteering with FIMRC in Bududa, Uganda, was an amazing experience that deepened my understanding of global health and rural healthcare.”

Beyond the clinical experience, she immersed herself in the local culture. Learning words in Lugishu, sharing meals with staff, and exploring Uganda’s natural beauty on weekends. 🌍

Experiences like this are what make SIHF different. Four weeks of deeper immersion, hands-on learning, cultural exchange, and growth alongside local healthcare teams and communities. 🩺

💙 Thank you, Tea, for being part of our mission in Uganda.

Applications for our Summer International Health Fellowship are currently open. If you’re interested in spending four weeks volunteering abroad in Uganda, learn more through the link in our bio. 🧑‍⚕️🧡

This is what traveling to our Huancayo, Peru project site looks like! 👀🇵🇪

When you volunteer with us at our Peru project site, you’ll first arrive in Lima, then travel about 8 hours east by road to Huancayo, a city in the central Andes where many communities still face limited access to quality healthcare. 🩺🏥

In this vlog, Madelyn, one of our volunteers captured the road, the views, and the first glimpse of the environment where our work takes place. ⛰️

At our Huancayo project site, we work alongside hospitals, health posts, universities, and community partners to support clinical activities, health screenings, outreach, and prevention-focused education. 🧑‍⚕️

Community Health campaigns in Huancayo, Peru 🩺💙🇵🇪

At our project site in Huancayo, we organize community health campaigns at least once a month in coordination with local municipalities. These campaigns usually serve between 50 and 60 patients in just a few hours.

Most of the time, we provide free blood pressure and glucose screenings, and depending on the day, we may also have support from dental or mental health professionals.

This initiative started with one simple goal: making basic healthcare more accessible for people who may not have the time or financial resources to wait for care through the public system.

If you’d like to be part of this work and volunteer with us in Huancayo, you can learn more through the link in our bio. 🧡🧑‍⚕️

At FIMRC, we believe healthcare should never depend on where someone is born or what resources they have access to. 🌎🩺

Today, nearly half of the world’s population still lacks access to quality healthcare. Since 2002, we’ve worked to open project sites in communities where these gaps exist, partnering with local teams to support long-term, community-based care.

Thanks to our volunteers and the support of our community, we’re able to help bring healthcare to people who need it most. 🤝

🧡Thank you for being part of this mission!
