Good Article: The Vagus Nerve and the Polyvagal Theory

Our Vagus Nerve (VVN) plays a critical role in the process known as neuroception, a part of our autonomic nervous system, entailing our bodies' ability to involuntarily assess and respond to cues in our environment, helping humans determine whether daily situations and encounters with others are safe or dangerous. According to Dr. Stephen Porges, the Polyvagal Theory describes how our autonomic nervous system encompasses 3 developmental stages of hierarchy that involve our Vagus Nerve: Immobilization (dorsal side of vagus nerve's response to extreme danger), Mobilization (moving away or fight response, and Social Engagement (ventral side of vagus nerve's response to feelings of safety and connection).

CranioSacral therapy assists our clients in adjusting Social Engagement and improving vagal tone, as it addresses the cranial nerves, resulting in positive effects on regulating the entire nervous system.
