An edgier truth about Biodanza is this: it is a transgressive practice. So much of its power and beauty lie in the fact that it does not abide culturally-sanctioned norms (particularly those of dominant US culture!). To start, it replaces competitive, hyper-individualistic, achievement-oriented values with a "biocentric" philosophy. In such an ethos, we center visceral human connection, instinctive emotional expression, and “vivencia”—the immediacy of life lived in the here and now.
If you’ve engaged in the dance long enough, you know that it’s a practice of falling in love—with ourselves, with our fellow humans, and with life itself. This happens largely through building communal somatic affinity—by way of gazes, shared affection, attuned contact, and co-regulation of nervous systems. What we often find, when we meet “bottom up” in the flesh first, is that there is an embodied intimacy that cuts right through more conditioned or compulsory notions of identity. This can be both surprising and liberating. And it is absolutely one of the aspects I hold to be most potent about Biodanza.
Beyond personal identity, the word “queer” takes on a broader meaning. In its most expansive sense, it describes anything that resists, disrupts, or falls outside of conventional societal norms or expectations. It is a framework for challenging the established status quo. From its inception, Biodanza has prioritized community building and social change. The group environment serves as a microcosm for a supportive, interdependent, affectively-oriented society that pays homage to what is sacred about all life—it is a circle in which everyone is not only included, but necessary to the vitality of the whole.
For these reasons and more, I have long considered Biodanza to be an inherently “queer” practice. And it feels like home to many of us who traffic outside the bounds of consensus reality. So in praise of that, I invite you to a special vivencia celebrating the beauty and resilience of queerness, our LGBTQ+ community, and Philly Pride! Come as you are, whether you identify as a member of the community or as a supportive ally. All bodies and expressions welcome.
