When a hidden social rule is missed, use it as a teaching opportunity.

Instead of:
❌ “That was rude.”

Try:
✅ “When someone asks how your weekend was, they may expect you to ask about theirs too.”

Explain the hidden expectation, give an example, and practice what they could do next time.

Not every social rule can be memorized.

Teach your teen to look for clues in the environment.

Are other people speaking quietly?
Are phones put away?
Are people waiting in a line?
How are coworkers greeting each other?

Learning to observe what’s happening around them can help teens identify expectations in unfamiliar situations.

Talking about social etiquette is helpful.

Practicing it is even better.

Role-play how to greet a coworker, ask a supervisor for help, join a conversation, or respond when someone gives feedback.

Then look for opportunities to practice those same skills in real life.

Practice + repetition helps build confidence.

Don’t just teach the social rule—teach the WHY behind it.

Instead of:
“Don’t interrupt.”

Try:
“Waiting until someone finishes lets them know you’re listening and gives them a chance to finish their thought.”

Understanding the why can make a social expectation more meaningful and easier to apply in different situations.

Knowing how to do the job is only part of being successful at work.

There are also unwritten expectations:

✔️ How to ask for help
✔️ When it’s okay to take a break
✔️ How to respond to feedback
✔️ What to do when you finish a task

Teaching these hidden workplace rules before problems arise can help autistic teens and young adults feel more prepared and confident.

“Be polite.”
“Act professional.”
“Use good manners.”

These instructions can be pretty vague!

Instead, explain what the behavior actually looks like:

➡️ “Put your phone away while your supervisor is talking to you.”

➡️ “Say hello when you arrive at work.”

Specific instructions make hidden social expectations easier to understand and practice.

Society is full of hidden social rules, expectations that are rarely explained but are often expected.

Things like knowing when to join a conversation, how loudly to speak, or when it’s appropriate to use your phone.

Autistic teens and young adults may not automatically recognize these unwritten expectations.

The good news? We can make hidden rules visible and teach them.

One of the most empowering skills a teen can learn is self-advocacy.

Examples include:

“I need extra time.”

“Can you explain that another way?”

“I’m feeling overwhelmed.”

“I need a break.”

Advocating for yourself builds confidence at school, work, and in the community.

Self-advocacy isn’t about asking for special treatment, it’s about communicating your needs effectively.
