The Tia Foundation

The Tia Foundation Sustainable Health Solutions
for Rural Mexico In many rural communities of Mexico, even tiny, spartan health clinics are often scarce.

Most communities rely on infrequent visits from volunteer doctors. Using a “teach them to fish” model, the Tia Foundation trains and equips Community Health Workers elected by their neighbors to respond to emergencies and provide basic preventative care in remote communities of rural Mexico, where there are no doctors. We accomplish this permanent, self-sustaining solution for less than $5 per per

son because we establish programs that allow local governments to take over continuing education and resupply the robust medical kits our health workers receive. Tia currently serves more than 786,000 people. Our health workers provide vaccinations, deliver babies, manage chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension, and offer preventative education to anyone in their community who wants to improve their health and well-being.

Some communities go months or years without medical care. In these cases, Tia sets up mobile clinics in plazas, churches, schools, or community health centers so residents can receive treatment close to home.

Our mobile clinics often include:
• Medical consultations with doctors, nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, and physical therapists
• Prescription and over-the-counter medications
• Prenatal and children’s vitamins
• Vaccinations and injections
• Laboratory testing
• Minor surgical procedures

But, lasting change requires local leadership. That's why we train Promotores, the community-selected health workers who keep villages healthy long after our team departs.

Promotores can reach 500 people and become trusted responders in emergencies and dependable educators for preventative care. They bridge the gap between the needs of the community and out-of-reach healthcare.

In many rural Mexican communities, basic healthcare is out of reach.

Clinics are understaffed, doctors visit irregularly, and transportation to the nearest hospital is limited or nonexistent. Families live hours, sometimes days, from medical support.

Homes may lack electricity, running water, safe birthing spaces, or a clean area to treat injuries. Farming steep terrain with hand tools leads to preventable accidents, and untreated chronic illnesses often worsen in silence.

A single medical emergency can push a family deeper into poverty.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

A trained health worker from within the community, equipped with a simple medical kit, can stabilize injuries, manage illness, provide education, and save lives.

One person changes the trajectory of an entire village.

Tia Foundation trains community-selected health workers to respond to emergencies and provide essential preventative care in areas where clinics are scarce or non-existent.

Today, Tia-trained health workers support entire regions by vaccinating children, assisting with childbirth, managing chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and delivering preventative health education within their own villages.

At the Tia Foundation, every partnership begins by listening.

Before launching a program, we meet with residents, local leaders, and healthcare workers to better understand the challenges affecting community health. We learn about issues ranging from diabetes and malnutrition to unsafe water and environmental hazards.

We also work to uncover the root causes behind these issues. In one community facing extraordinarily high rates of kidney failure, our team discovered that industrial contamination in the local river was impacting the drinking water families relied on every day. Without community engagement and data collection, the source of the crisis may have remained hidden.

During each visit, our medical teams provide care while volunteers gather important information on health, nutrition, housing, water access, and chronic illness. These insights help us work alongside communities to design programs focused on treatment, education, training, and long-term wellbeing.

By listening first, we can help build healthier people, stronger families, and more resilient communities.

For two decades, the Tia Foundation has supported rural communities in creating something remarkable: a sustainable healthcare ecosystem that is grounded in local leadership, trust, and the principle of neighbors supporting one another.

By training community-chosen health workers, promoting preventative care, and bolstering municipal connections, Tia has helped rural communities throughout Mexico establish enduring access to healthcare, even after outside volunteers depart.

Today, over 1 million individuals have access to medical services where little or none was available before because of Tia's approach.

This achievement reflects the resilience, knowledge, and dedication of the communities themselves. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to our mission of enabling healthier individuals and stronger communities over the past twenty years.

Follow along as we plan to reach even more in the next 20 years!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! 💙

Today is a celebration of culture, resilience, and community. It's also a moment to reflect on the communities we work alongside every day in Mexico.

At the Tia Foundation, our work is rooted in partnership. Through training local Community Health Workers—Promotoras—we’re helping expand access to healthcare to communities across rural Mexico where it’s often out of reach.

Real impact doesn’t come from the outside. It comes from within communities.

We are grateful to be part of that work.
