Why care about the cerebellum?
1. It helps coordinate movement!
If movement looks shaky, jerky, sloppy, tremory, or inconsistent, the cerebellum should be on your radar.
It helps with timing and helps determine when muscles turn on and off.
2. It helps reduce movement error.
Every rep is a prediction.
3. The cerebellum constantly compares "what I thought would happen" to "what actually happened" and updates the plan.
Easy cerebellum drills to test:
Finger taps
Thumb to index finger, middle finger, ring finger, pinky. Then reverse the order 5-10X each hand
Why I like it:
easy to teach
easy to regress/progress
quickly exposes coordination differences side-to-side
Heel-to-shin drag
Slide one heel down from the opposite knee, down the opposite shin and glide across big toe while lying down, seated, or standing.
Why I like it:
cerebellum classic
coordination + accuracy
very low threat
Alternating toe taps
Tap right toe, left toe, right toe, left toe to a steady rhythm (use a metronome for more FUN)
Then *change* the rhythm.
Why I like it:
simple
rhythm-based
gets at timing, which is a huge cerebellar job
Which one will you try ASAP??? 1, 2or 3??
