Today, Arizona Medical Association President Dr. Jason Jameson and ArMA member Dr. Andrew Carroll joined Attorney General Kris Mayes for the announcement of state litigation to end major insurance companies' alleged practice of price-fixing and systematically underpaying physicians.

Collusion between insurance corporations is a threat to healthcare in our state. Arizona already faces a dire healthcare workforce shortage. Reports project that by 2038, we’ll meet just 57% of our patient population’s need for primary care, making our outlook the worst in the nation. Insurers' alleged price-fixing schemes are driving physicians out of practice and making matters worse.

ArMA is in lockstep with the Attorney General on combating anti-trust conspiracies in healthcare. We are a plaintiff in federal litigation with a similar goal: to ensure physicians are justly compensated for the services they deliver so that patients can access the care they deserve.

As it stands, insurers have the upper hand. But together, we can level the playing field for Arizona patients and physicians.

The Arizona Medical Association is celebrating 134 years of organized medicine in our state.

A lot has changed about the profession of medicine since ArMA was founded in 1892. The mass production of antibiotics, the transition from paper charts to EHRs, and the advent of the polio vaccine, to name a few.

But, there's one thing that remains unchanged: our mission to foster excellence in medicine, champion patient care, and strengthen Arizona's communities.

That's a wrap on the Arizona Medical Association's 2026 Annual Meeting! Thank you to the physicians, residents, fellows, medical students, healthcare leaders, and industry partners who came together this weekend in Phoenix to shape the future of medicine.

We learned from expert speakers, cheered on research from the next generation of physicians, and had the honor of hearing about national efforts in organized medicine from American Medical Association President Dr. Bobby Mukkamala.

We hope you left the conference feeling invigorated and excited about the next era of medicine, which will better meet patients' needs thanks to the leadership of Arizona's physician community.

For Dr. Laura Mercer, the path to a career in medicine was winding.

Now, as an OBGYN serving some of the state's most vulnerable patients, her calling is straightforward: helping those who need it most, right here in Arizona.

When looking to change someone's life for the better, Dr. Mercer encourages looking right in our own background. That's why she is often found traveling to see patients across the state — including at a community health center in Phoenix, near the Arizona-Mexico border, and in Tuba City — where she helps low-resource communities receive the healthcare they deserve.

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Mercer advocates for others by teaching a personal development course, championing reproductive health care, and influencing health policies at the Arizona State Capitol.

In her interview, Dr. Mercer shares her advice for balancing service with self-care and making an impact that's both meaningful and sustainable.
