We are created to be in a community, to have a tribe we share with. To be surrounded by others, feel kinship and be touched. When we lose that connection, we can experience a condition called “skin hunger”, which can also be called “touch starvation”.

There are many studies that show that we need physical contact. Our mental, physical and emotional health all benefit from the calming effect that conscious touching brings. Some of these include strengthening the immune system, alleviating chronic arthritic pain, and even lowering blood pressure.

A hug or conscious touch has the ability to lower the stress hormone cortisol. We want to lessen stress so we can keep our cortisol levels healthy. Another hormone that is related to touch is oxytocin. This hormone encourages us to engage in bonding and nurturing behaviors. It is also associated with empathy, trust, sexual activity, and relationship-building. It is sometimes referred to as the “love hormone,” because levels of oxytocin increase during hugging and or**sm.

The neurotransmitter dopamine increases with conscious touch. Dopamine enables your brain to communicate and control movement. Basically, it acts as a chemical messenger between neurons. Dopamine is released when your brain is expecting a reward. When you come to associate a certain type of activity with pleasure, just the anticipation can be enough to raise dopamine levels.

With over 1,000 sensory neurons per square centimeter, our skin is the largest organ of the body. Think about this. The other four senses (taste, sight, hearing, smell) are all located only in the head. However, we are covered with skin inside and out. It is no coincidence that conscious touch offers a potent and powerful way of healing both our bodies and our minds. We can access this entire system of receptors which can then send specific messages to our body. These signals can help shift our current state of being energetically, physically, and emotionally.

Moksha is absolute freedom, liberation, and emancipation through Self-Realization. In some schools of Indian religions, moksha is used interchangeably with other terms such as vimoksha, vimukti, kaivalya, apavarga, mukti, nihsreyasa, and nirvana.

Once we are actualized, we not only know our true nature cognitively, but we exist everyday freed from ignorance. One lives in a fully conscious state and is liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Moksha happens when an individual moves into their full human potential exhibited through an alert mind, compassion, inner purity, creativity, and deep understanding.

Typically, the moksha time of life is in the later years during the Vata stage. This is when the influence of the ether element allows us to move into an ethereal state. We have time and space to move into deeper spiritual practices. To meditate on the Absolute Reality and the Consciousness that pervades everyone and everything. After years of Svādhyāya (self-study learning the discipline of the mind and the senses) one experiences a release from Maya which is life’s illusion. Moksha happens when we no longer see anything as separate.

That said there is no age range for Self-Realization. There have been plenty of incredibly young saints that have experienced and expressed Moksha. As we move into this springtime of new beginning, I wish all of you a blessed awakening.

May is mental health month, and having a calm and serene mind is considered to be a cornerstone of health, according to Ayurveda. Our mental state can impact many areas of our lives. The state of our mind and emotions will directly affect our digestion, metabolism, hormones, glandular system, and immune system. Research shows that mental health is closely linked with GI health. Emotions like stress, anxiety, and mood swings may trigger stomach problems and gastrointestinal disturbances, affecting mental health.

Many things influence our mental state ranging from the food we eat, what we expose to, our sense organs, the environment, the people that we surround ourselves with, and our sleep. These all will have a direct impact on our mental well-being.

We are communal beings, and having a tribe is essential to our mental well-being. Finding a sangha, community, or tribe that we connect with is very important for our happiness.

Yoga and Ayurveda have a lot to offer to help us navigate and digest our feelings, emotions, relationships, and life experiences. Just as we need to have a balanced and robust digestion to digest our food in order to be physically healthy, we also need to have strong mental digestion in order to digest our emotions and have a healthy mind.

There is a popular saying in Ayurveda, “Your issues are in your tissues”. This refers to having the ability to digest our life. Meaning that digesting our thoughts, emotions, feelings, and belief systems just as we need to be able to digest the meal we had last night. If we do not, just like last night’s undigested meal would turn into ama/toxins in the body, our undigested emotions will become ama and eventually develop into a disease process.

Udvartana: This vigorous and powerful treatment uses warm oil and herbal powders.

A detoxifying treatment for the lymphatic and circulatory system. Hand-blended herbs and oil are massaged into the skin, using invigorating strokes to stimulate weight loss and reduce cellulite.
The oil used for Udvartana is sesame-based, which is hot in potency and is infused with herbs which create lightness, dryness, roughness, removes blockages and stiffness, and has a 'cutting or liquefying action' on the fat tissue.

This oil also ensures that the skin does not become dry and remains soft and supple after treatment. Very beneficial for Kapha Dosha.

May be done at any time. A series of treatments is recommended.
