After a car crash, it's common to feel shaken for a while. For many people, that eases. For some, it doesn't.
Researchers followed people treated in emergency departments after road crashes for a full year. About 22% reported PTSD symptoms at 2 months. By 6 months that was about 18%, and at 12 months about 16%. Most of the improvement happened early, then it slowed down.

Pain from the injury was linked to PTSD symptoms throughout the year. The researchers suggest a quick screening for distress, and for how people are coping with pain, could help connect them with support sooner.

If you or someone you care about is still struggling months after a crash, it's worth talking with a doctor or a mental health professional.

Where do tomorrow's psychologists come from? Long before they're licensed, doctoral students train in supervised practicum placements, applying assessment and therapy skills alongside experienced, licensed clinicians.

With shortages of psychologists and other behavioral health professionals projected for years to come (HRSA, December 2025), that training matters for everyone who will someday need care.

Empower runs a doctoral practicum program as part of growing the next generation of clinicians. Interested in working with us? https://www.empowermh.co/careers

After a head injury, people often notice changes that are hard to put into words. Losing your train of thought. Forgetting appointments. Feeling slower, more irritable, or more tired than before.

A neuropsychological evaluation is one way to understand those changes. A trained clinician uses standardized tests and a detailed interview to look at attention, memory, processing speed, problem-solving, language, and mood. The results describe how someone is functioning now and can help guide treatment and track recovery.

It isn't a legal decision, and it doesn't promise any outcome. It's a clearer picture, so the right care can follow.

Have a VA claim exam coming up? Here's what to expect.

It's not a treatment appointment. The provider won't treat you, refer you, or prescribe medicine. Their job is to gather information for VA.

For a mental health exam, or a claim related to military sexual trauma, you can ask for a male or female provider when you confirm your appointment. Some exams can be done by phone or video. An exam can take 15 minutes or more than an hour.

The provider can't tell you your results or answer claim questions. If something about your exam didn't feel right, VA wants to hear about it.

Of the 54.6 million U.S. adults who had a mental illness last year, about half got mental health treatment. That's from SAMHSA's national survey.

When people who felt they needed care were asked why they didn't get it, common answers included thinking they should handle it on their own, cost, not having time, and not knowing how or where to get treatment.

If you were hurt at work or in a crash and your claims team or attorney has referred you to Empower for behavioral health care, some of those hurdles are handled for you. Our coordinators reach out to you, help find a time that works, and schedule the appointment, in person or by telehealth.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a good time to clear up a few myths about mental health at work.

Not everyone with a mental health condition needs accommodations at work, and many who do need only a few, according to the Job Accommodation Network. Those accommodations are often simple: a flexible schedule, adjusted breaks, written instructions, quiet time to focus, or working from home.

And they work best when someone checks in to see how things are going.

Returning to work after an injury or illness involves the whole person. Small, thoughtful changes can make a real difference.

Going back to work after a concussion doesn't always mean the concussion is behind you.

Researchers followed 232 adults for a year after a concussion. Nearly half of those who stayed in the study still had symptoms at 12 months, things like fatigue, headaches, trouble focusing, and memory lapses. Almost all of them were back at work anyway.

They also found that how serious the injury looked at first, such as being knocked out or getting a CT scan, didn't predict who would still be struggling. How someone felt in the first few days mattered more. Concussions from falls, assaults, and car crashes carried higher odds of lingering symptoms than sports concussions.

If you're recovering from a crash or a work injury and something still feels off months later, tell your treating provider and the professionals handling your case. Lingering symptoms deserve a closer look, even when you're making it through the workday.

After a car accident, pain is expected. But for many people, it lasts longer than they thought it would.

In a large U.S. study of people treated in emergency rooms after a crash, about 2 in 3 still had moderate to severe pain two months later. The researchers also found that how shaken people felt right after the crash seemed to play a part in whether pain lingered.

Body and mind recover together. If pain or stress after a crash isn't easing, it's worth bringing up both with your doctor.

If you or a Veteran you love has ever left the hospital with paperwork that was hard to follow, you're not the only one.

A VA Inspector General review released this week looked at discharge instructions from inpatient mental health care at 10 VA facilities. The instructions were handed out and follow-up appointments were usually booked. But many used medical abbreviations or shorthand clinic names instead of plain language, and often didn't say what each medication was for. VA agreed with the recommendations and has a plan to fix it.

In the meantime, it's fair to ask. Where exactly is my next appointment? What is this medication for? Can you write that out without the abbreviations? A good care team will be glad you asked.

If things ever feel like too much, the Veterans Crisis Line is there 24/7: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255.

For personal injury firms and legal case managers referring a client for behavioral health care, here are five questions worth asking any provider:

1. What happens to a referral after we send it?
2. Who contacts the patient and schedules care?
3. Are the clinicians licensed and credentialed for this service?
4. How are records kept private and shared?
5. Who keeps us updated, and how often?

Good partners answer these easily. Ours: an intake team reviews every referral, experienced coordinators reach the patient, licensed clinicians do the work, records stay in HIPAA-compliant systems, and a named case manager sends updates at each milestone.
