What’s the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia?

Many people use the terms interchangeably, but they’re not the same. Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions that affect memory, thinking, and daily function. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.

As we age, it’s also common for multiple brain changes to happen at once including Alzheimer’s changes, small silent strokes, and other protein buildups in the brain. Understanding these differences is an important step toward early detection, prevention, and better brain health.

Watch this reel to learn more about how dementia really develops and why brain health deserves more attention as we get older.

We just posted a new Healthspan Podcast Hot Topic Episode - Featuring a Discussion between Dr. Robert Todd Hurst, MD, FACC, FASE and neurologist Jeremy Pruzin, MD

In this highlight episode, to unpack one of the most common and most misunderstood topics in brain health: the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. They explore how vascular health, protein buildup like amyloid and tau, and lifestyle factors all intersect to influence cognitive decline. The conversation also dives into the concept of “mixed dementia,” why prevention strategies overlap with heart disease, and what actionable steps can significantly reduce risk, especially for those with genetic predispositions like APOE4.

Can you reverse poor metabolic health in just 3 months? In many cases… yes.

We see it more often than people think. Many people are told they are “pre diabetic” and that they do not need to worry yet. But the real issue often goes unaddressed: Insulin resistance.

Once people finally understand what is happening inside their body, everything changes. With the right personalized approach, the body can improve far faster than most expect. The foundation usually includes:

• Better nutrition
• Consistent physical activity
• Quality sleep
• Stress management
• Avoiding toxins
• Medications when needed

When these pieces come together in the right way for the individual, the transformation can be remarkable.

Metabolic health is not fixed. It can improve with the right strategy and support. Your future health is shaped by the actions you take today.

The system still isn't built around keeping you well.

It's built around reacting after something goes wrong like a heart attack, a stent, or bypass…
Because that's what gets reimbursed.

Hospitals are bought by private equity.
Insurance companies pay for procedures, not getting you well.

This leaves your doctors trapped in 7-minute visits with nothing but a prescription pad.

It's not the doctors. It's the system.

What makes this unacceptable is that over 90% of heart attacks are preventable. Yet heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States.

If you've been diagnosed with heart disease, and left with medications and a follow-up appointment six months from now, you’re not alone and you deserve more than that.

HealthspanMD members don't just get managed, and they aren’t treated like a number.
They get answers, a real plan and a team that is only incentivized by one thing: your results.

Crash diets, fasting, or quick fixes might move the scale temporarily but they don’t build real, lasting health. Fitness takes time, consistency, and intention. And unlike weight, it’s not something you can “cheat” your way into.

According to the research, it may be one of the most powerful predictors of how long and how well you live.

VO₂ max is one of the most powerful predictors of long-term health. It gives us real insight into your cardiovascular fitness helping us reduce the risk of preventable disease, frailty, and even cognitive decline.

At HealthspanMD, we include VO₂ max testing because it is one of the most powerful ways to understand your current fitness and your future health.

• It is objective and precise, not just a guess or estimate.
• It measures how much oxygen your body can use during exercise
• This reflects how well your heart, lungs, and muscles are working together.
• Higher VO₂ max = lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and early death

This advanced test allows us to
• Identify where you are compared to optimal ranges for your age
• Personalize your exercise plan, especially your aerobic and zone training
• Track progress and adjust your plan to keep you improving

Insurance was designed to pay for sick care… Not health optimization, not prevention, not longevity.

In today’s system, a physician is rewarded for:
• Short visits
• Reactive decisions
• Treating disease after it shows up

They are not rewarded for:
• Time
• Deep prevention
• Advanced risk detection
• Ongoing coaching and accountability

That’s why truly exceptional care doesn’t live inside a strictly insurance-based model.
A membership model changes the equation:

• Time to think, measure, and plan
• Care focused on preventing disease, not chasing it
• A true partnership between doctor and patient

If you want healthcare that helps you stay well, not just manage illness, the model has to change.
This is what the future of healthcare looks like.

Heart disease doesn’t have to be an inevitable outcome. With the right data, we can move beyond guesswork and take a proactive approach to prevention.

“Do your patients also maintain a relationship with a cardiologist that performs procedures as needed?”

The short answer is that it’s completely up to the individual.

But here’s how it typically works in the real world:

At HealthspanMD, our physicians work collaboratively with doctors all over the city and all over the country.

And most of the time, that collaboration works really well.

Because the roles are very different.

Conventional cardiologists are trained to do procedures.
That’s where they’re exceptional.
And it’s what the system is built around, procedures that are covered by insurance and designed to intervene when something has already gone wrong.

At HealthspanMD, we focus on the other side of the equation:
• Identifying risk early
• Finding and fixing root causes
• Reversing heart disease before it becomes a crisis
• Preventing heart attacks

So for many patients, it becomes a balance:
• They invest in optimization, prevention, and reversal with us…
• While also having a “just in case” relationship in place for acute care, emergencies, or procedures if they’re ever needed.

What we hear most often from members who do this is something like:
• You’ll see that doctor once a year
• It’s a quick, 7-minute visit
• They review your numbers and say, “Wow… what have you been doing?”

And that’s usually the extent of it because when you’re actually improving your health, there’s often not much for them to do.

But when something does need to be done… that’s where this really matters.

Dr. Hurst has spent over 30 years in medicine building relationships with top specialists across the country.

As he puts it:
“When I send my patients for a procedure, I’m sending them to people that I would have doing my procedure if I needed it.”

That includes leading experts at places like Mayo Clinic, Banner University, and trusted colleagues throughout the community.

So the referral isn’t random.

If you’re in Arizona, that network is a major advantage of being a HealthspanMD member.

And if you’re not?

We still help you build that same level of support locally, working with patients across the U.S. and Canada to connect them with high-quality physicians in their area.

This isn’t about choosing one approach over the other.

It’s about having the right strategy…
And the right people…

Before you ever need them.
