DID YOU KNOW? The latest data shows Pitocin may be administered for way too long during inductions. Historically, once Pitocin goes on, it stays on. But the latest data shows that discontinuing or reducing Pitocin once a mother hits active labor (6cm) can drastically improve outcomes and lower risks! The active phase is when the body’s natural labor mechanisms fully take over. Continuing Pitocin past this point can lead to uterine fatigue, fetal distress, a higher risk of c-section , postpartum hemorrhage and many other risks. I recently supported a mama who had been induced. Labor was moving, and she needed a break from the intensity of Pitocin contractions. Knowing the evidence, and after talking to her, I politely asked a nurse if she could lower the Pitocin to let her body take the lead. The first response? Basically ignored. Then I advocated. The nurse reluctantly agreed. Guess what? Mama’s body took over beautifully, contractions stayed effective, and she gave birth with no complications, and no epidural. This is exactly why birth education and informational doula support matter. Doulas don’t make medical decisions, but we do help you understand the evidence so you can confidently use your voice in the labor room. ✨🛡️🤍 . *not medical advice, I’m not a medical professional.
