Our dream is to continue working on becoming good stewards of our land, restoring forest health through wildfire mitigation, fostering native plants & raising free range chickens with livestock guardian dogs.

And just like that…the window for surveying bumblebees 🐝 upcountry is closed as of August 31st. Every moment exploring and observing…just being still with the bumblebees, native wildflowers🌻and butterflies🦋 was truly cherished. You will be missed my bumblebee friends, until next summer!

This Fall, Hangs on the Homestead will be offering a handful of California native plants - sold individually and/or as Pollinator Garden kits to help support our local ecosystem!
We recently updated our website to showcase the native plants and what will be available coming up in October…the best time to plant your natives so they will be ready to bloom in Spring for the pollinators!

Gardening with California native
plants is an easy way to support native wildlife and biodiversity; they provide food & shelter for our local birds, insects, pollinators and other forest friends! Plus, we are enjoying how adapted they are to our forest ecosystem…requiring less water & pest management, are more fire-resistant, and grow in our iron-rich clay soil.
This Fall, Hangs on the Homestead will be offering a handful of California native plants as part of our ‘Seasonal Additions’ section in our homestead shop, to help support our local ecosystem!
Here are some of our favorite natives shown in the photos: Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa), Leopard Lily (Lilium pardalinum), Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa).
What California natives (including trees/shrubs/flowers) are your favorite and you would like to have available locally?

We do forest fresh chicken egg deliveries 🚙⛰️🌲regularly, right to your front door! Deliveries can be made as a one-time purchase or join our other customers who prefer to ‘preorder’ through our subscription option in which you can secure your fresh eggs for up to 3 months in advance!
Upcountry deliveries are happening tomorrow, Tuesday July 14th in Volcano, Pioneer & Pine Grove. If you live in any of those communities, feel free to place your delivery order by 10am 7/14 to receive your eggs promptly! 🐓🪺🌲https://

Just checked back in on the ladybug eggs, 9 days after spotting the eggs on the underside of a narrowleaf milkweed leaf and here they are! Newly hatched ladybug 🐞 larvae!
Ladybug larvae typically eat about 400 aphids in the three weeks before pupating. If aphids aren’t available, they will eat soft scale, whitefly pupa, thrips, and spider mites if no aphids are available. Alrighty, let’s get to it little guys!

These absolutely beautiful olive green eggs are laid by our Olive Egger chickens. These ladies are excellent layers (about one egg per day) and great foragers, the leaves won’t last a week where they free range. The picture doesn’t show it well but their black feathers have a gorgeous iridescent blue hue in the sunlight 🌞 The Olive Egger is not recognized by the American Poultry Association as a purebred, but it is a popular choice among homestead chicken keepers and enthusiasts!

Hello neighbors 👋 If you can at all, avoid driving up highway 88 right now or please slow down if you must travel that way. (Apologies in advance for the sad photos)
The California native Tortoiseshell butterfly is migrating east across hwy 88 in large swarms at any given moment, especially between Bear River Reservoir & Tragedy Springs. Unfortunately, as we were driving the speed limit of 55 mph, the butterflies cannot survive the force of impact…
We were devastated when we unintentionally drove through a sudden swarm of these beautiful butterflies and immediately pulled over to save the ones that were still alive off our grill 🥺. For the remainder of the trip, driving 35 mph allowed the butterflies to avoid impact and just ride the wind. Please be mindful of the swarms, the adults of the first brood emerge in late May or early June and begin moving to higher elevations in search of food.🪻🌻

While observing the underside of showy milkweed leaves, I found these ladybug 🐞 eggs, which typically hatch within 3 to 10 days after being laid. Ladybugs usually lay their eggs near a food source🌱often targeting areas with high populations of aphids (such as milkweed, aphids love it) which are a primary food source for their larvae. I’ll continue to monitor these eggs and see if I can get a photo of the hatched larvae!
