Dino Day! We watched a video of kids breaking open big Dino “ice eggs”. We used scarves to discover our Dino surprises! He liked the squishy ones much more than the hard plastic ones. Then he helped clean up by brushing them into the bin! He helped turn book pages, too! A great interactive class 🦕🦖

TBT original posting 2022

Told by daughter: (editor's note, have Kleenex handy)

A little background history: Mother's journey of healing and wellness began over a year ago with a hemorrhagic stroke followed by a traumatic brain injury from a bad fall. Before coming to the center, she had received rehabilitation therapy in all three disciplines at three hospitals, two rehab units, and a rehab to home facility two times as well. She then proceeded to do in home therapy twice followed by outpatient therapy. Each would slowly continue until she reached a point of plateauing. Eventually, she could no longer receive services because it was determined she couldn't progress at the required pace set forth by insurance stipulations. Understandably, this was very discouraging because we believed there was still more progress she could make. We as a family agreed we weren't going to give up.
Upon learning about the center, we felt another door had been opened. What a God-send the Rehabilitation Center of Neurological Development has become for mother's healing. Mother continues to blossom and amaze us with even the smallest improvements each day. It is wonderful how the staff celebrates her accomplishments while at the center much like we do at home. Mom is a beautiful woman who has always put others ahead of herself throughout her life in both family and career.
My mother's improvements have been remarkable since receiving services from the programs offered by the Center of Hope. One of the first things we noticed was the excitement mother showed when preparing to arrive at the center. This excitement still continues after 8 weeks. She has looked forward to participating in classes and seems to understand how much she is progressing each week. We, of course, reinforce her with encouragement and point out the things we see, no matter how small, that indicate positive progress in her abilities.
I believe her communication has gotten so much better because in each therapy each staff member interacts with her one on one and she feels comfortable with them. I can't begin to express how wonderful everyone is to show their compassion, support, encouragement, and love for my mother. They are very patient to not rush her to say her words, and that works well with her for expressing herself. Again, she feels comfortable which leads to her taking her time to let her thoughts form into words to say. Her sentences have more content and meaning.
After coming to the center, she is in a positive and upbeat mood as she rides home. Her joy is so rewarding to see. She feels good about herself and what she has accomplished.
We have seen many break throughs in the past two months of her recovery progress by attending the therapies at the Rehabilitation Center three times a week. Fortunately, my sister and I were able to observe mother in a class with Christine. We were impressed with the progress she had made in many different areas within the two month period. The one on one instruction, a non-disruptive environment seem to be a key to her success. Christine is extremely perceptive on what type of approach is best for mothers' understanding. Neurological Program and Neurofeedback are important components to her progress too. With the combination of all three there is progress being made. It is evident all three therapies work together for her individual needs.
There are numerous improvements that have occurred with mother since beginning the program. Motor skills have been built upon with improvements seen in areas of sorting, categorizing and sequencing. Her visual field areas have grown, along with coordination, following directions and comprehension. Mother's communication skills (both verbalizing and listening) have also shown great improvement. There is so much more content and words used in her sentences now. Mother has improved in areas of physical coordination and strength. She was even able to proudly steer and pedal the three wheeled bike through the parking lot. I feel she was able to accomplish that because of the combined skills she has learned at the center. Where anxiety had been an area of concern prior, that has been alleviated quite a bit. Mother is now adapting much better with changes in routine. Sleeping through the night without interruption has gotten much better. Becoming upset or depressed is much less frequent. She has developed a positive attitude regarding receiving therapy, seems to understand she's making progress and that by coming to the center she is receiving the help she needs to get better. My mother has definitely gained more self confidence in the past two months, which is a huge blessing in itself. Words simply cannot express the gratitude we feel for this amazing opportunity for my mother to have been given.
Her family and I are looking forward for mom to continue with her therapies at the Center of Hope. Actually, that brings to mind a comment mother made the first time she entered the center in January of this year. We were seated in Beverly's office after mother's evaluation, when mom shocked my father and I by saying as plain as could be in a weak and quivering voice to Beverly, "I feel like there is hope".

First he created fireworks and then a bracelet that I suggested might glow in the dark. He was happily surprised to find out I was right and then enjoyed exploring the room.
