I often refer to Jon Kabat-Zinn and his attitudes of mindfulness during my workshops.

On a recent SUP adventure I found myself once again embracing the concept of the Beginners Mind.

From the opposite side of the lake I saw a glistening movement. I knew they were spider webs and had to get closer for a peek.
I paddled over and secured myself to the downed tree so I could just take a few moments observing.

I watched the gentle movement in the breeze, noted the symmetry and watched the interplay of light on each strand.
It was truly as if these were the first webs I'd ever witnessed.
A calmness and sense of appreciation filled me completely.

Sometimes the most wonderful moments happen when you just take time to slow down and notice them.

"Self Love" and "Self Compassion"

These terms are tossed around all the time. Maybe you see them and think, "That’s nice, but I don’t really need it," or "I don't have time for that."

But take a quiet moment to ask yourself: How do you actually talk to yourself?

I took myself to the trails yesterday.
My reentry to trail running.
Jogging mixed with some walking. A "wog"?

The results were profound.
Not in my stamina or strength.
But in the calming power of nature.

I tuned into my senses.
Surrounded by birdsong.
Captivated by fragrances of things in bloom.
Felt the cool rain on my skin.
The slosh of my feet through the wet, muddy trails.
The power of proprioception as I slid in the muck.

I stopped to notice this deer and calmly spoke to it so it wouldn't run away.
The fuzz on its budding antlers.
Its long lashes.
The soulful dark eyes.
We talked without words.

Exactly what my nervous system needed.
