One common misconception about hospice is that hospice is a place. Hospice is not a place but rather a philosophy. This philosophy is centered around comfort, dignity, and care for patients nearing the end of life. Hospice emphasizes quality of life over curative treatment.

Today is National Forgiveness Day. Forgiveness is not about forgetting, it’s about freeing ourselves from the weight of what has been. In hospice care, we witness how letting go can bring peace, comfort, and even joy in life’s most tender moments.

Today, on National Forgiveness Day, we invite you to take a quiet moment to reflect on relationships, offer grace to others, and extend kindness to yourself. Whether it’s a conversation, a letter, or simply a thought in your heart, forgiveness can be a powerful step toward healing. Let love and understanding be the legacy we leave behind.

My name is Erica Hubsch, and my journey has always centered around the human experience and providing compassionate support, especially during life’s most vulnerable moments. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology, which laid the foundation for my deep interest in human behavior, relationships, and the ways we navigate loss and connection.

I have provided my professional life to hospice care, walking alongside individuals and families as they face end-of-life transitions, death, and bereavement. To further support those coping with loss, I earned a certificate in grief counseling. This training has allowed me to help individuals with loss in many forms. Grief can be overwhelming; you do not have to face it alone. Please call 412-266-2034 if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Talking with children about hospice can feel overwhelming. Adults often want to shield them from sadness, fear, or confusion. It can be hard to know how much to share, what language to use, whether they should visit, or how to explain that someone they love may be approaching the end of life.

Hospice can be explained to children as special care for someone who is very sick and whose body is not getting better. The goal is to help the person feel as comfortable, safe, and cared for as possible.

The key is to explain hospice as care and support, not abandonment. Hospice does not mean no one is helping. It means the focus of care is comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Grief doesn’t have a timeline. It ebbs and flows. A Grief ambush can come on suddenly, and all the feelings are flooding through you. Try to let yourself feel EVERYTHING-even the emotions that scare you. Grief has a way of bringing up sadness, anger, guilt, even numbness. Don’t rush to “fix it.” Instead, give those feelings space. Sit with them. Journal them. Speak them out loud. Feelings lose their power to consume us when we stop running from them. Healing begins with honesty-especially to yourself.

Grief doesn’t follow a single path, and it doesn’t look the same on any two people. Each person carries their loss in a way shaped by their memories, their relationships, and their own heart. There’s no right pace, no right expression, only the truth of what you feel.

Grief changes you. It reshapes the way you see the world, the way you love, and the way you move through life. Some days are heavy, some days a little lighter. Sometimes you smile at the memory, and sometimes it knocks the wind out if you. And both are ok.

Try taking a few moments to write a letter to the person you lost. Say what you wish you could say. Share a memory. Tell them what’s going on in your life. You don’t have to show anyone-it’s just for you. Somehow, this brings a little peace, a little connection, and a little space to breathe.

If you are grieving right now, take your time. Be gentle with yourself. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means learning how to carry the love forward.

August 30th is Grief Awareness Day. In an effort to create a more Grief-literate world, we will post throughout the month of August.

Grief affects everyone. But too often, we don’t talk about it-because it’s uncomfortable, misunderstood, or met with silence. Let’s change that.

Grief isn’t something you “get over.” It can impact mental, emotional, and physical health. Being present for someone-without trying to fix them-is a powerful act of love. Whether you’ve experienced loss or are supporting someone who has, take a moment to honor what grief teaches us: about love, memory, and what it means to keep going.
