Our annual cancer conference , ASCO 2026, is finally over. Many new drugs were featured. Immunotherapy and specific drug antibody combos once again, dominated the sessions. Chemotherapy is still in fashion and some old drugs are making comebacks.
I watched many of the presentations , trying to keep up to date with the ever changing treatment landscape.
Pancreatic cancer, stage 4 and relapsed cases usually have a dismal prognosis but this year it appears that we finally have a drug that doubles survival.
Many of the rare cancers also saw new drugs that are finally effective .
Survival is improved, yes, but underneath all the hype one thing is clear: cure is still not possible for many of the advanced cancers, despite the popularity of immunotherapy and sophisticated drug + antibodies , and targeted therapies.
Fortunately, some abstracts that focused on metabolism and cancer care are beginning to emerge among some of the abstracts. There was an abstract that discussed regular exercise as improving survival after chemotherapy, and another abstract that discussed fasting combined with chemotherapy. Attention to lifestyle and diet is at last gaining some attention but still pales in comparison with the emphasis on genetics as the cause of cancers.
It is high time for metabolism to take center stage in cancer discussions.
We are now attracting some attention !
