Looking back, there are three signs that I totally ignored that pointed to my eventual burnout.

1. The feeling of anxiousness as soon as I woke up. Because I knew I had more work on my plate that I could handle and I was already stressed out just after opening my eyes.

2. Defensiveness at the mere suggestion that I wasn’t handling things well. Even when people offered to help me. Admitting I was struggling = failure.

3. Apathy and checking out. The defensiveness dissolved into apathy and I became non-reactive to any feedback, good or bad. I just wanted to get through the day.

I wish I would’ve been more educated on the topic of burnout and listened to how my mind and body were reacting to a job that I once loved to do.

I know it sounds cliché, but listen to your body. It is telling you something is wrong way before you realize it.

As we all know, social media could be a good thing or a bad thing in our lives. If your feed is filled with people who make you feel badly about yourself, your body, your job, and your life get rid of them. It’s one thing to be inspired by somebody and aspire to what they have achieved. It’s another to compare yourself to someone whose life is portrayed as perfect or flawless and causes you to feel badly about your situation.

give your feed a once over and make sure it’s a healthy mix of people you can relate to and aspire to realistically.

Do you know the number one sign of burnout?

And do you know how to pull yourself out of it?

Self-care does not have to be complicated, expensive or time-consuming. It can be less than 15 minutes a day of focusing on your mental, physical or emotional health.

Join me every day in September for a quick micro self-care tip that will take you less than 15 minutes to do. And by investing that 15 minutes into yourself, you will reduce stress, and help to prevent long-term burnout.

Things you should never say to someone who is burned out or on their way to becoming burned out.

1. Relax.
2. You need to set better boundaries.
3. Just practice some self-care.

While all of these can be good advice in certain situations, when somebody is actively stressed out they don’t need to be lectured on the things that they should have done to avoid burnout.

For many people those ships have sailed and what they really need is someone to just sit with them and listen.

Avoiding burnout means taking care of yourself mentally, physically and emotionally. But a lot of wellness folks equate self care to big (and often expensive) activities like spa days or vacations. I’m here to help you find 10-15 minutes a day to add in micro self-care habits. Every day in September I’ll be giving an idea for self care that you can do in just a few minutes. Those minutes add up and help to decrease stress, build resilience and prevent burnout.

Are you in?

We’re coming into September and in the wellness world that means it is self-care awareness month. And you’re going to see a lot of content on social media that defines self-care as things like going to the spa or taking a trip or meditation and journaling. These are all wonderful self-care ideas. But they are not realistic for some people to do in their day-to-day life. If I could recommend one thing for you to do that is self-care. It would be to set one boundary in September that frees up time for you to do something that brings you joy. If that’s going to a spa, fabulous! If that’s simply having the time to read a book or plan that vacation or create a meditation space in your house, that is self-care! Because without the ability to walk away and have space and time to take care of yourself, you can’t do all of those things. Boundaries are the ultimate act of self-care.
