Pitt Public Health students and faculty in the Department of Epidemiology recently attended the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, where they presented research on aging, physical activity and maternal health.

Highlights included a featured symposium chaired by Nancy W. Glynn, PhD, showcasing findings from the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging, along with presentations from EPI faculty and trainees on aging, physical activity and maternal health. The department also celebrated Emma Gay, MPH, who earned first place from the ACSM Aging Special Interest Group for her late-breaking poster abstract.

For one week each spring, Scott Szypulski swaps his desk for a Habitat for Humanity build site.

A Pitt-Greensburg alum and research administrator in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Human Genetics, Scott joined Pitt-Greensburg students for a week of service through Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge.

This month's staff highlight is Helen Chen!

Helen serves as Academic Administrator for the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science, where she supports students, faculty and academic programs across the department.

Helen enjoys the variety her role offers and the opportunity to connect with people each day. Whether she is assisting students, coordinating academic processes or supporting faculty, she helps ensure the department’s programs run smoothly.

Outside of work, Helen enjoys spending time with her family, exploring Pittsburgh and traveling. She recently visited Japan, where she explored several cities and experienced the country’s rich culture and history.

Irving Zhang, a senior mechanical engineering student, painted the Pitt Public Health building as part of the SA0120 Painting Studio course. For this project, students were tasked with researching a Pittsburgh building to uncover and tell the story of its unique identity. Irving chose this site not only for its striking modernist lines but for its monumental role in global health.

"Spending time in the public health building, I've noticed that whenever I go to class, we pass through the lobby and see all the equipment used for chemistry and medical research," Irving said. "There are also beautiful paintings on the wall that show the history of the polio vaccine and the public health department. It’s really interesting."

Through her work, Irving captured the transition from "surviving through technology" to "liberation through the vaccine," bridging the gap between cold structure and human triumph.

This past fall, Pitt Public Health concluded our second annual Staff Committee Give-Back Campaign, raising just over $2,000 to support benevolent care for Reformed Presbyterian Home, a nonprofit organization that provides a supportive living environment to older adults in the region.

“I am proud to support this effort, both personally and as the Staff Committee chair,” said David Arndt, IT manager. “The importance of supporting our local community cannot be overstated.”

Megan Marron, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology, is the 2026 James L. Craig Endowed Excellence in Education Award recipient, for exceptional teaching and mentoring of graduate students.

Miranda Yaver, PhD, assistant professor of health policy and management, has been named the recipient of the Bernard D. Goldstein Undergraduate Public Health Teaching Award, which recognizes excellence in teaching in the Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program.

A $500,000 planned gift from the estate of Calvin Shrader (BUS ’52) will help trainees and early-career investigators working with the Center for Aging and Population Health (CAPH) develop novel ideas and test new approaches, which can lead to major advances in how we support healthy aging.
