Congratulations to Lisa M. Bodnar, professor of epidemiology and associate dean for research, who has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors in health and medicine.

Bodnar was recognized for her expertise in how maternal nutrition shapes pregnancy, birth and the long-term health of mothers and children.

Goats, gourds and One Health 🐐
Our Climate Change and Human Health students (EOH 2140) spent Friday at Garfield Community Farm, nearly three acres of once-abandoned land that now grows fresh produce for the neighborhood, supports wildlife and gives residents a place to grow their own food.
One Health connects human, animal, plant and environmental health, and this was a hands-on look at what that means. (Also, the goats were not allowed in the greenhouse.) Garfield Community Farm

Shoutout to Pitt Public Health’s Aubree E. McMahon, MPH, PhD candidate in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences!

Writing a first scientific paper can feel a lot like building a plane mid-flight. To help change that, McMahon and the APHA AJPH Student Think Tank launched AJPH Presents: The Making of a Paper. The podcast was recently featured in The Nation's Health!

Co-hosted by Aubree and Mercer University's Hridith Sudev, MPH, the series gives early-career researchers a look behind the scenes of published studies—focusing on the real-world bumps, major rewrites, and key decisions that rarely make it into the final manuscript. ICYMI! 🎉we're celebrating Dara D. Méndez, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, for receiving one of two inaugural Pitt Health Sciences Community Building Excellence Awards. She was recognized for advancing maternal and reproductive health and justice among Black people in Allegheny County.

Carl Lawson, associate vice chancellor for engagement and enrichment, health sciences, surprised the crowd, including Méndez herself, with the award at the 2026 EMBRACE Summit. Lawson praised Méndez for advancing the nation's understanding of racism's public health implications and for building welcoming spaces that connect the University of Pittsburgh with surrounding communities, particularly historically marginalized populations.
