FLAG SOJOURN 250 ARRIVES IN MASSACHUSETTS

BOSTON – The Massachusetts State House welcomed Flag Sojourn 250 to the Massachusetts State House Hall of Flags on June 12 in conjunction with a special award ceremony honoring women veterans. Flag Sojourn 250 is the journey of one American flag to every U.S. state, every U.S. territory, and every U.S. military cemetery overseas. Flag Sojourn 250 is a project of national unity from the National Flag Foundation (NFF) and America250’s America Waves program, an epic tribute campaign to the greatest American symbol: the American flag.

Members of the Sheriffs’ Honor Guard will transport and present this special flag on behalf of national and local partners, including the National Flag Foundation, America250, MA250, the National Sheriffs’ Association, the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association, the Executive Office of Technology Services and Security, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, UPS, the American Battle Monuments Commission, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services.

“The Massachusetts Sheriffs have been serving the public health and safety needs of their communities from the earliest days of our Republic,” said Patrick J. Cahillane, President of the Massachusetts Sheriff’s Association. “That spirit of service is foundational to the office and runs deeper today than ever during our long history. We, the 14 Massachusetts Sheriffs, are honored to participate in the Flag Sojourn 250 and hope that the celebrations of our nation’s founding will remind everyone that service, sacrifice and love of community are among the defining characteristics of being an American.”

The Massachusetts visit began on June 11 with the ceremonial transfer of the Flag Sojourn 250 flag from New Hampshire Sheriff William Wright to the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office. Following the State House ceremony, the flag will continue its journey across the Commonwealth with appearances in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts National Cemetery, the Mayflower II, USS Massachusetts, 9/11 Memorial, and at the Bunker Hill 251st Anniversary commemoration.

Sheriff Bowler and ADS Jason Cuyler, who also proudly serves as a member of the Berkshire Community College Board of Trustees, were honored to attend the 66th Berkshire Community College Commencement Ceremony last evening.

The ceremony celebrated the remarkable accomplishments of the graduating class and recognized the dedication, perseverance, and hard work that brought each graduate to this important milestone. We extend our sincere congratulations to the Class of 2026 and wish them continued success in their future endeavors.

This year’s commencement also marked a historic occasion as it was the final commencement ceremony presided over by President Ellen Kennedy. Throughout her tenure, President Kennedy has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Berkshire Community College, fostering opportunities for students, supporting faculty and staff, and strengthening the college’s connection to the community. Her leadership and lasting contributions have left an indelible mark on the institution and will be remembered for generations to come.

We are confident that the college will continue to thrive under her guidance and vision.

Congratulations to the graduates, and thank you to President Kennedy for her extraordinary service to Berkshire Community College and the Berkshire community.

Today, the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office remembers and honors the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Memorial Day is more than the start of summer, it is a solemn day of remembrance for those who gave their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We pause to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of our fallen heroes and the families who carry their memory forward. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to remember those who gave everything for our country.

Brotherhood is more than a word in law enforcement and in the military, it is a bond built through sacrifice, loyalty, courage, and standing shoulder to shoulder through life’s hardest moments. It means knowing that no matter the danger, no matter the hour, someone has your back. It is forged in long nights, difficult calls, deployments far from home, and in the shared commitment to serve something greater than ourselves.

Memorial Day is more than the start of summer. It is a solemn reminder of the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our freedoms and protecting others. It is a day to honor the fallen, remember their sacrifice, and reflect on the cost of the freedoms we often take for granted.

Today, we also remember Officer Richard Jaquez, a brother, a protector, and a hero. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Though gone, his legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the badge he wore with pride, and the brothers and sisters who continue the watch in his honor.

May we never forget those who gave everything in service to others. Their sacrifice is the foundation of our freedom, and their memory will forever remain in our hearts.
