Have you ever been told, “Your labs are normal,” even though you still don’t feel well?
Maybe you’re exhausted, struggling with brain fog, gaining weight, having digestive problems, or simply know that something feels off.
A “normal” lab result means your value falls within that laboratory’s established reference range. Which for many lab tests, is essentially the range where about 95% of a selected healthy reference population falls. That does not mean where your numbers should fall. In functional medicine we look for your numbers compared to the "optimal" range, where they should be.
We may also look for patterns across thyroid function, nutrient status, iron, blood sugar and insulin, inflammation, hormones, and more.
The “optimal” ranges in this graphic represent examples of narrower targets sometimes used by functional medicine practitioners; they are not universally established medical reference ranges and shouldn’t be used to diagnose or treat yourself.
At Premier IFM, we believe the question shouldn’t only be “Is this result in range?” It should also be “Does the entire clinical picture help explain how this patient feels?”
