This quote stopped me. Probably because there have been many times when someone offered a perfectly reasonable suggestion and something inside me wanted to say, You don't understand. Not because the suggestion was wrong. Because it started somewhere I wasn't.

I think that distinction matters to me more now, especially as I share my story publicly. I never want my experience to become a set of instructions for someone else's healing. I don't know what another person needs. I barely knew what I needed for much of my own life.

What I can say is what happened to me. What I noticed. What frightened me. What helped me. What didn't. And then perhaps someone else recognizes a small piece of their own story somewhere inside mine. That feels very different from telling someone how to heal.

I'm curious: What helps you feel genuinely listened to rather than advised? Share a thought if you feel comfortable.

I have spent years trying to understand my story. That researcher part of me wants chronology. Cause and effect. Patterns. Something I can put into a framework and say, There. Now I understand. My story has not been particularly cooperative.

Memory comes in pieces. Understanding changes. Something I wrote six months ago can look different when I read it today. I discover that what I thought was about one thing was probably about three other things, too.

And then there are the parts I still can't feel. Those may frustrate me the most. I'm learning, very slowly, that my story doesn't owe me clarity on my timetable. Maybe some chapters need to sit open for a while. I don't particularly like that answer. But I'm pondering it.

📖 Is there a part of your own story you're still trying to understand? If you'd rather not share the story itself, leave the word “patience.”

This quote makes me think about how difficult it once was for me to imagine a life that was fundamentally different. I could imagine professional goals. I was actually quite good at that. Another degree. A different position. A new research project. Something measurable that I could work toward.

Imagining myself differently was harder. A woman who didn't automatically apologize. A woman who trusted her own judgment. A woman who played the harp because she wanted to hear what came from the strings, not because someone was evaluating her. A woman who could choose peace without wondering whether she had earned it.

Some of those things still feel more imagined than lived. But maybe imagination comes before possibility. I'm not sure I ever thought about it that way.

Finish this sentence: I'm beginning to imagine a life where...

You don't have to share it. But if saying it aloud feels right, there is room for it here.

I survived for decades without realizing how much of my life was organized around survival. That is such an odd thing to understand now.

I could earn degrees while surviving. Raise children while surviving. Build a career while surviving. Teach, research, lead, perform, move across the country, start over, and apparently become quite accomplished while surviving.

Becoming seems to be taking much longer. Maybe because becoming asks questions that survival didn't have time to ask. What do I want? What do I actually enjoy? Who am I when I'm not trying to prove that I belong?

I don't have clean answers to those questions yet. Some days I find that frustrating. I have spent most of my life being very good at finding answers. Apparently, this isn't that kind of work.

Reflection: What question are you still living rather than answering? I'd love to hear it if you'd like to share.

I have always been a dreamer. Sometimes I wonder how that part of me survived. There were years when my life was incredibly practical. Raise my daughters. Work. Earn another degree. Build another program. Solve the next problem. Keep moving. Dreaming seemed almost indulgent when there was so much that needed to be done. Yet I apparently never stopped.

Redeem Thyself was once an idea. So was returning to the harp. So were the books sitting in various stages on my computer. Even Montana has lived in my imagination in different ways over the years. I am still afraid of some of these dreams. Afraid they won't work. Afraid I'll discover I imagined something larger than I can actually build. But I keep imagining anyway.

Maybe the dreamer in me knew something the survivor didn't.

🌙 What is one dream you haven't completely let go of? You can name it below, or leave a 🌙 if you're not ready to give it words yet.

I used to think grief belonged to death. That seems almost strange to me now because I have grieved so many things that never had a funeral. Years. Relationships. The childhood I wish had been different. Parts of myself I never really had the chance to know. Even music, although I don't think I understood that I was grieving it during the years I was away. And grief doesn't seem to move in any reasonable order.

Something can feel settled for months, even years, and then a memory catches me somewhere I wasn't expecting it. I still have moments when I think, Really? We're here again? Maybe grief isn't always about going backward. I don't know. I'm beginning to wonder whether sometimes it is simply another way of remembering that something mattered.

For National Grief Awareness Day: Is there something you've grieved that you didn't initially recognize as grief? Share a word if you would like, or simply hold the answer for yourself.

I could probably spend a year thinking about this quote. I have spent an extraordinary amount of energy worrying about what other people think. Whether they understand me. Whether they approve. Whether I have disappointed them. Whether something I said was taken the wrong way.

Even now, when I share more of my story publicly, that fear is there. What will people think?

I wish I could say I have reached the point where I don't care. I haven't.
What I am beginning to notice, though, is that caring about someone's opinion and allowing that opinion to determine who I am are not quite the same thing. That feels important.

Maybe staying rooted doesn't mean the wind stops moving the branches. Maybe it means something underneath remains steady enough that the tree doesn't have to follow the wind wherever it goes. I'm going to keep thinking about that one.

Story Invitation: Has there been something you've slowly discovered was never yours to carry? If you'd like, leave one word below.

I spend a lot of time thinking. Probably too much sometimes. I analyze conversations after they happen. I wonder why something bothered me. I replay things. I look for patterns. The researcher in me apparently doesn't know when the workday ends. But I'm discovering another kind of thoughtfulness. It isn't analysis It is noticing.

Noticing when someone seems quieter than usual. Remembering something another person told me weeks ago. Sending the message. Asking the second question instead of assuming the first answer told me everything. And maybe extending some of that thoughtfulness toward myself, which still feels strangely harder.

Today, for National Thoughtful Day, I'm wondering about the small ways we let people know they matter.

Nothing grand. Just...I remembered you.

💛 Who came to mind while you were reading this? Maybe today is a good day to tell them.

What do I need? Such a simple question. Right?

I spent years asking other questions. What needs to be done? Who needs me? What is expected? What would make this easier for everyone else? I became very good at those questions. They helped me build a career, raise my daughters, earn degrees, lead programs, and keep moving when life was anything but easy.

I am much less practiced at this one. Sometimes I still don't know the answer. That has surprised me. I thought once I started asking what I needed, the answers would somehow appear. Instead, I often sit there thinking, I have absolutely no idea.

Maybe learning to ask is part of it. I'm still working on the listening part.

Journal prompt: Write “What do I need today?” somewhere. You don't have to answer it immediately. See what comes to mind later.

I used to have a very different picture of what healing would look like.

I think somewhere in my mind there was a version of me who eventually wouldn't hurt anymore. The memories would be there, of course, but they wouldn't have much power. I would understand everything. I would feel whole. That isn't really what is happening.

There are scars. There are places that still hurt. There are things I understand intellectually that haven't found their way into the rest of me yet. And there are days when I wonder how something I have worked on for so long can still feel so close. But maybe wholeness was never supposed to mean untouched.

I keep looking at trees when I think about this. The oldest ones are covered with evidence of what they have survived. Broken branches. Fire scars. Places where the bark grew differently. Still a whole tree. I'm pondering what that might mean for me.

🌲 If this brings something to mind, what does “whole” mean to you now?
