āØHereās a wild update for youāØ
I have officially submitted my application to midwifery school. Iāve finally left the denial stage and accepted that Iāve been building the foundation for āMidwife Serenaā for a while time now.
There were two moments this year that slapped me square in the face and said, āStop acting like you donāt know what youāre being called to do.ā
The first happened early this year when a close friend of mine, who was also a client, had an unintended home birth right in her kitchen. I thought Iād be scared, shocked, or frozen.. but I wasnāt. I moved purposefully and skillfully with the knowledge I had. The āwtf just happenedā moment came later. š
That experience was evidence to me that my brain had the potential to call the shots.
The second moment that sealed the deal was two midwives I adore personally and revere professionally told me they felt it was time for me to take the next step. Theyāve known me through much of my birth work journey and saw āmini midwife Serenaā start developing over the years. Their belief in me made me see myself differently and take my potential more seriously.
My almost decade in healthcare has prepared me in ways Iām incredibly grateful for. My years as a surgical tech taught me to observe and anticipate. My time as a doula taught me advocacy, humility, and how to sit with outcomes I canāt control. As a midwifeās assistant, I began learning the untamed, raw, and formidable nature of physiological birth.
Iām not pursuing midwifery because of the cutie, easy parts. Iām pursuing it because my mind, heart, and soul wonāt be at ease doing anything else. Iām pursuing it because the care I intend to provide is NEEDED.
I am a safe space for all: Black people, people of color, q***r people, neurodivergent people, disabled people, gender nonconforming people, undocumented people.. EVERYONE. I always will be and midwifery needs that. No hard rights or wrongs but true person first care where we mesh best practice with protecting the patientās mental health, personal values, and wishes.
So the application is in. Iāll know for sure in July. Wish me luck. šš
