The first 30 days in an assisted living community can shape a resident’s entire experience.

While communities do an incredible job welcoming new residents, many older adults still struggle to find their place, build connections, and discover what will make this new chapter meaningful.

That’s why I developed the New Resident Onboarding, Transition & Engagement Program through North Star Inclusive Recreation Solutions.

This specialized service is delivered as a package of 4-8 individualized sessions during a resident’s first month in the community.

As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and Leisure Lifestyle Coach, I work one-on-one with each new resident to explore their past and present interests, strengths, abilities, and personal goals. Together, we create an individualized Leisure Wellness Plan designed to support engagement, purpose, and quality of life.

These sessions are far more than an interview or assessment.

Residents actively participate in meaningful experiences that help uncover what brings them joy and fulfillment. Depending on the individual’s interests, sessions may include:

• Creative arts projects
• Music-making experiences
• World travel discussions and trivia
• Adapted golf or pitch-and-putt activities
• Brain wellness and cognitive enrichment activities
• Personalized leisure exploration experiences

As interests emerge, the resident and I review the community’s activities calendar together and identify programs, events, clubs, and outings that become their personal “must-attend” experiences.

This process builds excitement, creates anticipation, and helps residents begin establishing meaningful routines and social connections from the very beginning.

Equally important, I provide valuable insights to the community’s engagement and care teams by communicating each resident’s interests, preferences, strengths, abilities, and support needs. This helps staff deliver a more personalized and person-centered experience from day one.

When residents feel understood, connected, and excited about what’s ahead, they are more likely to develop a true sense of belonging.

Because successful resident engagement doesn’t begin after move-in.

It begins with intentional onboarding.

We have a wonderful week in review at North Star Inclusive Rec ⭐️! Here are some that made the highlights:

⭐️We started last Saturday by facilitating a high energy music session with Caregivers and individuals at The New Jewish Home Adult Day Care! We also met with caregivers to review Self-Care Strategies. It was a wonderful way to conclude May which is Mental Health Awareness Month.

⭐️Monday was National TV Game Show day and Theresa had the pleasure of hosting an interactive Jeopardy game for seniors!

⭐️Tuesday we were at Woodbury Heights Nursing & Rehabilitation to facilitate our weekly Inclusive Live Music & Movement on the specialized memory care unit.

⭐️Wednesday we had the awesome experience of bringing the first ever Cardio Drumming for Wellness class to The Sinclair at Port Washington!

⭐️Thursday we had the distinct pleasure of bringing a live Hand Drumming & Percussion Party to the scenic ocean-view patio at Long Beach Nursing and Rehabilitation Center!! Staff and residents were highly engaged!! The residents gave great feedback on our “Laughter is the Best Medicine Experience”!

⭐️Friday we were back to The Grand Point in Island Park for a lively fun-filled Funk-Inspired Cardio Drumming session. Laughter and Rhythm filled the room. Residents were having so much fun that a few decided to tell some funny jokes on the microphone 🎤 😂 It was a day filled with opportunities for Creative Expression!! Their new director, Tracey Bella Ferragallo is “hitting it out of the park” with her programs for staff & residents!

💜 June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month 💜

This month, we recognize the millions of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The forget-me-not flower serves as a powerful symbol of remembrance, resilience, hope, and the importance of honoring those living with memory loss.

As the founding Recreation Therapist and Leisure Lifestyle Coach at North Star Inclusive Recreation Solutions, I, Theresa Morale, have the privilege of supporting individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias through meaningful recreation, music, movement, reminiscence, creative expression, and opportunities for social connection.

While memory loss can change many aspects of life, meaningful engagement, purpose, joy, and human connection remain incredibly important. Therapeutic recreation programs can help individuals maintain abilities, express themselves, reduce stress, and experience moments of success and belonging.

I also want to recognize organizations like Alzheimer's Disease Resource Center, Inc., CaringKind, Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation, Alzheimer's Association and Alzheimer's Foundation of America for their ongoing commitment to research, education, advocacy, and support for individuals and families navigating dementia.

Together, we can raise awareness, promote brain health, and create more dementia-friendly communities where every person is valued and included.
