May 16 - Great Program at Healing Meals in Simsbury!

Wouldn’t it be great to have a garden full of flavor and nutrition? On Tuesday, May 16th at 6:00 pm, join Joan Palmer, founder and director of The Institute for Sustainable Nutrition, at Healing Meals in Simsbury to learn how to build and maintain your very own nourishing vegetable and herb garden. Joan, who is also a “Food as Medicine” instructor at Quinnipiac University, will teach us how and where to plant our gardens, how to harvest culinary herbs and store them for winter, and how these plants can heal us. We’ll also plant and take home starter seeds!

Each $25 ticket includes light refreshments prepared by the talented Healing Meals kitchen crew.

This event is part of the unique monthly Nourishing Ourselves series hosted by the Healing Meals Project. Each monthly event features a different speaker and activity covering topics such as physical wellness, mental health, healthy food swaps, cooking, our relationship with ourselves, and much more.

TWO TICKET OPTIONS:
Single Ticket: $25 - includes entry to one event
Full Series Ticket: $125 - includes entry to the next 6 events for the price of 5

Healing Meals is a great organization that provides the nourishment for those who need it the most. Summer is coming and this is a wonderful opportunity for Plainville students to help out in the kitchen or garden or doing other needed tasks. Consider this youth opportunity. Contact Healing Meals for more information. PS - I've been a volunteer for a few months and it is wonderful to play a small role in helping meals get out each week.

This month, founder and CEO Sarah Leathers is featured on the Comcast Newsmakers site. The longest running cable news platform in the country, Comcast Newsmakers invites regional and national trailblazers to discuss ideas, assess community challenges and progress, and inspire meaningful action. Host Nathan O’Leary led a wide-ranging discussion about using food as medicine, and tapped into Sarah’s deep knowledge of health and wellness.

Hiking challenge!

Are you ready for an outdoor adventure exploring CT State Parks and Forests? Curious to discover some best kept secrets and build your awareness of CT’s history, nature, or landscapes? Join DEEP's State Parks and Public Outreach Division as we ring in spring today with the start of the 2022 Sky’s The Limit Hiking Challenge (“STL”)!

Take the challenge to get outside for some fresh air and experience this year’s STL theme: “Parks' and Forests' Best Kept Secrets.” These Best Kept Secrets can be the park or forest itself, or a component within. Discover sunken boats, native plant gardens, scenic viewsheds, battlegrounds, caves, and more! Hike or walk as many of the locations as you want, while photo documenting along the way.

Participants who hike or walk 15 of the 20 trails will receive a “Sky’s the Limit” hiking staff medallion and a certificate for their efforts. For hiking all 20 locations, 50 participants will receive a hand-carved hiking staff made by the CT DEEP Sawyer; names of all who complete the 20 designated hikes will be randomly drawn.
