Your habits run your life. Not your goals. Not the vision board. Your habits first!
And your habits aren’t really habits…they’re actually what stem from your beliefs, your patterns, your fears wearing the costume of a routine.
The scroll at 11pm. The yes you didn’t mean. The bracing before the door opens. The walking on egg shells. The automatic yes, when you really wanted to say no. The overexplaining. The patterns of behavior you want to move from.
Here’s the part most people skip. Those beliefs didn’t start as thoughts.
They started as sensations!
Something happened in your body, too much, too fast, too soon, too alone and the parts of you organized around it to keep you safe and make sure your needs were met. They kept you small, useful, ahead of it. The gift of being able to read a room and adjust accordingly…
The experience never got completed properly. So the part never got to put down the protective shield.
Twenty years later you’re calling it a personality trait. I did too. I called mine “discipline” and ran a company on it…at the expense of my own wellbeing.
So let me ask you something.
What if you turned toward your body every day? Not to fix anything, but merely with curiosity to understand yourself a little more.
What if you stopped overriding the signals and actually answered them?
What if there was enough safety built in your system that you didn’t have to brace your way through a Monday?
Who would you be then?
I don’t think you’re missing willpower. I think your body is still running an old job description nobody ever told you expired.
That’s the work. Not more effort from the neck up. Slower. From the body…and then the mind can sync up. When we can begin to close loops and cycles we’ve been operating from for years, we can begin to create new patterns, new beliefs, newfound safety, new habits and therefore a new quality of life!
This is just the beginning of the work. This is the awareness piece…and from here, we go deeper, we begin making different moves, our confidence begins to rise as we commit to ourselves and doing and being the person we know we get to be. {continued in comments}
