We talk a lot about "Self-Care," but did you know there is a major difference between Self-Soothing and Self-Care? Understanding the distinction is a huge part of Self-Growth.

Self-Soothing is about comfort in the moment. It’s what we do to "dampen" the noise of a hard day.

✨ Examples: Watching your favorite show, a warm bath, a treat, or a weighted blanket.
✅ The Goal: Immediate stress reduction and comfort.

Self-Care is about the future you. It’s the "maintenance" work that makes life easier to live in the long run. Often, self-care doesn't "feel" good in the moment—it takes effort.

✨ Examples: Setting a difficult boundary, attending Individual Therapy, meal prepping, or finally addressing a trauma with a specialist.
✅ The Goal: Sustainable health and long-term resilience.

At Sego Lily Counseling, we believe both are necessary! You need the bubble bath to get through a rough Tuesday, but you need the therapy to understand why every Tuesday feels so rough.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we challenge you to look at your routine. Are you only soothing the symptoms, or are you caring for the root?

Ready to invest in true self-care? We have therapists in Pleasant Grove, Spanish Fork, Lehi, and Salt Lake City ready to help you build a foundation worth celebrating. Click the link in our bio to get started!

At Sego Lily Counseling, we also recognize that for many, today isn't just a day off; it’s a day of deep, heavy remembrance. Whether you are a veteran navigating the complexities of PTSD, a family member walking through the long journey of Grief and Loss, or someone feeling the weight of collective mourning, we see you.

Grief doesn't have a "finish line," and it certainly doesn't follow a calendar. Sometimes, the holidays we use to honor the past can be the most difficult to navigate in the present.

How We Support You Through Remembrance:
PTSD Treatment: Specialized care (like EMDR and ART) for those struggling with the echoes of service or trauma.

Grief and Loss Counseling: A compassionate space to process loss without judgment or a deadline.

Veterans Mental Health: Understanding the unique challenges faced by those who have served and their families.

Healing doesn't mean forgetting; it means finding a way to carry the memory with peace. If the weight feels too heavy today, please know that you don't have to carry it alone.

Our team is here to walk alongside you. If you’re ready to talk, click the link in our bio to find a therapist who specializes in trauma and grief support at any of our Utah locations.

Have you ever said something in the heat of the moment that you immediately regretted? Or felt an emotion so big that you felt like you were about to "boil over"?

When we are in a state of high emotional arousal, our logical brain goes offline. At Sego Lily Counseling, we teach the STOP Skill as part of our DBT Skills Training to help you hit the mental brakes before a crisis escalates.

Here is how to STOP:

S — Stop! Do not move a muscle. Don't speak, don't text, and don't react. Your emotions may try to pull you into action, but freeze for just a moment.

T — Take a breath. Take a slow, deep breath in and out. This sends a signal to your nervous system that you aren't in immediate physical danger.

O — Observe. Notice what is happening inside and outside of you. What are you feeling? What are you thinking? What is the other person doing? Just gather the facts.

P — Proceed Mindfully. Ask yourself: "What is my goal right now?" or "Will my next action make this situation better or worse?" Then, choose a path that aligns with your values.

Emotional Regulation is a muscle. The more you practice "stopping" during small stressors (like a red light or a slow computer), the easier it will be to use when big crises hit.

Ready to master your emotions instead of being controlled by them? We offer a DBT Skills Training group at our location in Salt Lake City. Click the link in our bio to join!

To the Class of 2026: You did it! 🥳 But if we’re being honest... does it feel a little terrifying?

Graduation is often branded as the "happiest time of your life," but for many, it’s a season of intense Anxiety and Identity Crisis. Moving from the structure of school into the "great unknown" can make you feel like the ground is moving beneath you.

At Sego Lily Counseling, we specialize in Life Transitions. We help young adults navigate:

The "What now?" fear.

Shifting friendships and social circles.

Building a sense of self-worth that isn't tied to grades.

Managing the pressure to have it all figured out.

It’s okay if you don't have a 10-year plan yet. Healing and growth happen one step at a time. Let’s make sure those steps are on a foundation of self-compassion.

Feeling the post-grad jitters? Our counselors in Lehi, Provo, and SLC are experts in helping Gen Z find their footing. Book a session via the link in our bio!

Did you know that Sego Lily Counseling offers specialized support for those living with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and other chronic illnesses?

Living with a chronic condition isn't just a physical battle; it’s a mental and emotional one. The constant cycle of "good days" and "bad days," the medical gaslighting, and the loss of the life you used to have can lead to profound medical trauma and anxiety.

We believe that your physical health and mental health are inextricably linked. Our POTS Support Group and individual therapy sessions provide a space where you don't have to explain your symptoms—we already get it.

You are more than your diagnosis. You are a person worthy of a life that feels manageable and worth celebrating.

Ready to find your community? Click the link in our bio to learn more about our POTS Group and Chronic or Terminal Illness support at our Utah locations!
