Our next speaker reveal is here! ✨ Join us in welcoming Mr. Shereef Akeel, Civil Rights Attorney, to the AMMSA 2026 National Conference!

Shereef H. Akeel is a civil rights and trial attorney with decades of experience representing individuals whose constitutional and civil rights have been violated.

Shereef has been recognized as a Forbes Top 200 in 2024, recognized as a super lawyer by his peers for 20 years, and was recently inducted in the Hall of Fame by the Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Throughout his career, he has handled significant civil rights cases, including representing Iraqi detainees who suffered abuse and torture at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. His practice focuses on civil rights litigation, discrimination, constitutional protections, and holding individuals and institutions accountable for violations of the law.

A passionate advocate for justice, Shereef brings extensive courtroom experience and a practical understanding of the challenges individuals face when exercising their constitutional rights. He is committed to educating others about their legal protections and empowering them to advocate for themselves confidently and responsibly.

Dr. Dilhana Badurdeen, M.B.B.S., M.D., is a Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Assistant Professor in Medicine Associate Consultant at Mayo Clinic Florida.

She is an Obesity Medicine specialist and Bariatric endoscopist and was previously the lead for the Johns Hopkins Bariatric Endoscopy Program.

Her research interests include obesity pathophysiology and innovation to develop novel, less invasive treatments for obesity and metabolic disease.

Our next speaker reveal is here! ✨ Join us in welcoming Dr. Samaiya Mushtaq to the AMMSA 2026 National Conference!⁠

Dr. Samaiya Mushtaq is a psychiatrist, mental health educator, and writer. Dr. Mushtaq earned her medical degree from Vanderbilt University prior to completing a four-year residency in psychiatry. She serves as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern and previously maintained a private practice seeing clients for therapy.

A former strategy consultant at BCG, she also partners with organizations and workplaces to design and deliver education on mental health and wellbeing for employees. She is accomplished in designing innovative skills-based educational programming on wellness and spirituality, with experience teaching to local Muslim communities, corporations, and medical students.

Dr. Mushtaq’s essays and editorials have been published in The New York Times and The Dallas Morning News, and on Muslimmatters.org.

Shaykh Abdul Aziz Waheed is an orthopedic surgery resident and co-founder of Miftaah Institute.

He earned his medical degree at Oakland University William Beaumont and is currently an orthopedic surgery resident at Detroit Medical Center.

Shaykh Abdul Aziz serves as Dean of Academic Affairs at Michigan Islamic Institute. He is also a hafiz, graduate of islamic sciences studies with ijazzat for teaching hadith.
