ANOTHER COMMON QUESTION

“If I’m not taking any medications, do I still need to enroll in a Part D plan?”

The answer is yes. Even if you aren’t currently taking prescription medications, it’s important to enroll in a Medicare Part D plan when you first become eligible for Medicare.

If you choose not to enroll when you’re first eligible and don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage, Medicare may assess a Late Enrollment Penalty. This penalty is equal to 1% of the national base beneficiary premium for every month you go without Part D or other creditable prescription drug coverage. Once applied, this penalty is generally added to your Part D premium for as long as you have Medicare prescription drug coverage.

The good news is that many Medicare Part D plans have low or even $0 monthly premiums, depending on your location and the plan you choose. While your medications may still have copays or other out-of-pocket costs, enrolling in a Part D plan when you’re first eligible can help you avoid paying a lifelong late enrollment penalty in the future.

A question often asked by individuals approaching age 65 is, “I’m still employed and have employer-provided health coverage, do I need to enroll in Medicare?” The answer is no. If you are still working, you are not required to take Medicare. Your employer coverage is considered “credible coverage,” meaning the government will not impose a penalty for not enrolling in Medicare.

A frequent question asked from clients is “Do I have to enroll into Medicare Part B if I’m on my spouses employer plan?” The answer is no. If you can prove you’ve had (credible coverage) since turning 65, you’re not obligated to enroll in Part B. Credible coverage meaning employer coverage, FYI cobra is NOT considered credible coverage. Very important to know that.
