🌿🧪 MASTER HERBALIST KNOWLEDGE — PART 16 🧪🌿
Here’s something most people NEVER learn about herbal medicine:
THE HERB ISN’T THE WHOLE STORY — THE CONSTITUENTS ARE! 🔬🌱
A medicinal plant can contain dozens—even hundreds—of naturally occurring compounds. Understanding those compounds is where phytochemistry and pharmacognosy enter herbal education.
Some major groups include:
🌿 Alkaloids — often highly biologically active compounds
💜 Flavonoids — polyphenols studied for antioxidant and cell-signaling activity
🟠 Tannins — astringent compounds that bind proteins
💧 Mucilage & Polysaccharides — water-loving compounds responsible for the slippery, soothing qualities of certain herbs
🔥 Volatile Oils — aromatic compounds that can evaporate and degrade with improper heat or storage
🌸 Saponins — compounds known for their characteristic foaming properties
But HERE is where it gets interesting. 👀👇🏾
HOW YOU PREPARE THE PLANT CHANGES WHAT YOU EXTRACT.
Tea. Tincture. Glycerite. Oil infusion. Powder. Capsule.
They may all begin with the same plant, but they are NOT necessarily chemically identical preparations.
Temperature, extraction time, particle size, solvent, plant-to-solvent ratio, oxidation, light and storage can influence what ends up in your final preparation.
🔥 THIS IS WHY HERBALISM IS A SCIENCE AS WELL AS A TRADITION.
Don’t just memorize, “What herb is good for what?”
Learn the BOTANY.
Learn the PHYTOCHEMISTRY.
Learn the PHARMACOGNOSY.
Learn the SAFETY.
Learn the FORMULATION SCIENCE.
🌿 KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
