In March, Athena Syed and Andrew Simonds responded 911 to a private residence for a reported choking incident.

Upon arrival, they found a young adult in cardiac arrest.

After administering shocks from the defibrillator which achieved return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), the patient was loaded into the ambulance for transport.

During transport, the patient experienced another cardiac arrest, received additional shock(s), and regained ROSC, this time, in the emergency department.

Further medical evaluation revealed a 100% occluded right coronary artery, prompting immediate intervention during emergency coronary catheterization.

Notably, the patient made a full neurological recovery and was eventually discharged.

Excellent work by our Star EMS crew, McLaren Emergency Department and the new, state-of-the art, McLaren Cardiac Cath Lab.

Congratulations to EMT/EMD Dispatcher Cody Mallo on receiving his Five + Years of Service recognition at Star EMS.

Cody is one of those quiet professionals that somehow manages to make a big impact without ever needing the spotlight. In over five years at Star EMS, he has built a reputation as someone who simply shows up, works hard, stays calm, and takes care of people — whether that’s in the back of an ambulance or behind the dispatch console handling stressful situations with professionalism and confidence.

Coworkers describe Cody as sweet, reliable, intelligent, and just the right amount of coolness to make everyone laugh. He’s the kind of person people genuinely enjoy working with. In fact, many of our senior staff specifically ask to work with him when open shifts become available because they know exactly what they’re getting: a dependable partner, steady under pressure, and someone who always has your back.

While working full time and covering countless overtime shifts, Cody has also been attending Wayne State University full time, recently completing Pharmacology school and preparing to begin his residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital next month. We are incredibly proud of him and excited to see where his career takes him.

And perhaps one of the best examples of who Cody is as a person came during a random workplace conversation about churros. A coworker mentioned a favorite place had stopped making them. The next day, without saying a word, Cody showed up with churros from another well-known spot for the staff that had been talking about it. Nobody even realized he had overheard the conversation. That simple act of kindness says a lot about the kind of human being he is.

Of course, working full time, going to school full time, and burning the candle at both ends occasionally catches up to you. There was the legendary incident where Cody overslept for work so deeply that fellow EMT Alex Schlutow reportedly drove the ambulance to Cody’s apartment, climbed the balcony, entered the apartment, and loudly woke him up in bed. Thankfully it was Alex and not a burglar… but honestly, that story perfectly represents the friendships and family atmosphere that exist at Star EMS.

Cody, thank you for five years of dedication, professionalism, kindness, an

As a proudly patriotic organization, we hold a deep respect for those who have defended the freedoms we enjoy every day. Inside our headquarters hangs a wall dedicated to past and present service members — a daily reminder that courage, sacrifice, and love of country are never forgotten here at Star EMS.

We proudly support our veterans, stand beside organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project, and remain forever grateful to the heroes who answered a call far greater than themselves. Their sacrifice is the foundation of our freedom.

Today, we remember the fallen.
We honor their families.
And we recommit ourselves to serving our communities with the same spirit of duty, compassion, and dedication that defines the American service member.

From our Star EMS family to yours — may we never forget those who gave everything for this great nation.

At Star EMS, we spend a lot of time recognizing the paramedics and EMTs people see arriving on scene… but behind every well-coordinated response is a calm, organized voice making it all happen.

Today, we’re proud to recognize EMD Certified Dispatcher Courtney Darling for her years of service and dedication to Star EMS.

Courtney came to us from the banking industry looking for something more meaningful, more exciting, and more connected to helping people — and she found her calling in EMS communications. Whether she’s coordinating emergency responses, scheduling interfacility transports, or reassuring someone on the other end of the phone during a stressful moment, Courtney does it all with professionalism, patience, and an incredible calm demeanor.

If dispatch had an award for “least likely to panic,” Courtney would probably win it every year.

She keeps an organized workspace, keeps the operation moving smoothly, and somehow manages to stay steady no matter how busy things get. Our crews, hospital partners, and callers all know they can count on her to get things where they need to be — and on time.

And of course… we would be remiss if we didn’t mention Gizmo.

For those lucky enough to work dispatch shifts with Courtney, Gizmo the Shih Tzu has become a bit of a Star EMS celebrity himself. From Halloween costumes to greeting crews with tail wags and attitude, Gizmo has earned a fan club of his own around the building.

Courtney may be a little shy about the spotlight, but today we’re shining it on her anyway.

Thank you, Courtney, for everything you do for our crews, our patients, our customers, and our team. Dispatchers are the heartbeat behind the scenes — and we are incredibly lucky to have you at Star EMS.

Folks, please join us in recognizing EMT Dawn Robinson as she celebrates five + years with Star EMS.

Dawn is one of our own — a graduate of the Star EMS EMT Academy, where she quickly stood out as one of the top students in her class. After successfully completing the program and passing her National Registry exam, she began her EMS career with Star EMS and has continued making a positive impact ever since.

What makes Dawn special is her heart for people. She has a naturally nurturing personality and genuinely cares about those around her. Whether it is her patients, coworkers, friends, or family, Dawn is the kind of person who wants to help fix problems, lift people up, and make life a little easier for others. She builds strong bonds with her EMS partners, and many of those partnerships quickly turn into lasting friendships. That says a lot about the kind of person she is.

Dawn is honest, loyal, hardworking, and deeply committed to the mission of Star EMS. People with her compassion and dedication help define our culture and remind us why our motto matters so much:

“We take care of people — That’s what we do.”

Thank you, Dawn, for five + years of caring for others, supporting your team, and representing Star EMS so well. Congratulations on this milestone and thank you for everything you do.

Congratulations to EMT Alex Schlutow on being recognized with his Star EMS Five Year Service Pin and Certificate during EMS Week.

While Alex has actually been with Star EMS for eight years, this recognition reflects the launch of our new Years of Service program and the category he currently falls into on our recognition wall.

Alex’s story is a special one for our organization. He was part of the very first EMT class hosted at Star EMS back in 2018, where he quickly stood out for his work ethic, professionalism, and academic performance — graduating with the highest scores in the class. From there, he successfully completed the National Registry process and immediately began serving the community as a full-time EMT with Star EMS.

Since then, Alex has continued to build a reputation all his own. He was recently recognized by the Oakland County Medical Control Authority for his role in the lifesaving care of a young person suffering cardiac arrest — a moment that reflects the skill, calmness, and professionalism he brings to the job every day.

Around headquarters, Alex is usually the quieter guy in the room, but his work speaks loudly. He is exceptionally thorough with patient documentation, consistently gathers the information needed to help our billing and administrative teams succeed, and represents Star EMS professionally with every patient, nurse, physician, and fire department he encounters.

He is well liked by his peers, respected by leadership, and trusted by the communities we serve. Perhaps most importantly, Alex carries himself with humility, a great sense of humor, and a genuine commitment to taking care of people.

We are proud to have watched Alex grow from one of the first students in our EMT program into the outstanding healthcare professional he is today.

Congratulations, Alex — and thank you for eight great years of service to Star EMS.

“We take care of people — that’s what we do.”

Congratulations to Ron Streetman on celebrating 10 years with Star EMS!

Ron began his career with Star EMS in 2016, and somewhere along the way became one of those people who can seemingly do everything around here. Depending on the day, you might find Ron serving as a supervisor, EMT, dispatcher, problem solver, scheduler, event medic, unofficial morale booster, or occasionally all of those things before lunchtime.

If you’ve ever attended an Oakland University sporting event and noticed EMS standing nearby, there’s a good chance Ron and his longtime partner Tacara were there together — prepared to care for athletes, coaches, fans, and the guy who thought eating stadium nachos and running up the stairs was a good combination.

While Ron’s professional credentials and experience might make him seem serious at first glance, those who know him best know he loves to laugh and keeps people smiling during even the busiest shifts. At the same time, he is deeply committed to excellent patient care and positive outcomes. EMS has allowed Ron to see some of the worst moments people can experience, including caring for victims of violence and tragedy, but it has also shown him the incredible strength of communities coming together to support one another during difficult times.

One thing that says a lot about Ron’s character: when asked about himself and his contributions to Star EMS, he immediately shifted the spotlight toward his partner Tacara — praising her dedication to family, community, academics, and patient care. That’s just who Ron is. Humble, supportive, team-oriented, and always willing to recognize the people around him.

Outside of work, Ron is a proud family man who somehow balances a busy professional life and multiple roles while still making time for the people who matter most.

Simply put, Ron is an all-around good guy. The kind of person you want responding when things go wrong, and the kind of coworker you’re grateful to have beside you when things get busy.

Thank you, Ron, for 10 years of dedication, leadership, humor, and hard work. We’re proud to have you as part of the Star EMS family — and we’re hoping you stick around for at least another ten years.

We are proud to recognize EMT Tacara Williams for her 10 Year PLUS Service Recognition at Star EMS.

Since joining Star EMS in 2014, Tacara has built a reputation as someone who genuinely cares about the people around her — her patients, her partners, her family, and the community she serves. She delivers exceptional patient care with compassion, professionalism, honesty, and fairness, and her patients quickly recognize that about her.

Tacara is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Oakland University, with a passion for helping underserved populations and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. That desire to help people extends far beyond the ambulance. Whether she’s caring for patients during a difficult moment, mentoring newer partners, or supporting coworkers with constructive guidance, Tacara expects excellence — from herself and those around her.

Her longtime EMS partner Ron describes her as smart, honest, fair, and someone who keeps her coworkers on their toes in all the right ways. She gives constructive criticism thoughtfully, receives it professionally, and uses her experience to help guide others toward becoming better providers.

Outside of EMS and school, Tacara is deeply family oriented and loves celebrating the accomplishments of her loved ones while also being open about the real-life struggles families experience together. She’s a proud mom, a sports fan, and a familiar face at Oakland University sporting events where Star EMS provides on-site EMS coverage. And if there’s a good deal at Costco or Sam’s Club… don’t worry, Tacara is absolutely going to tell everybody about it.

Tacara is incredibly kind, but she is also someone who will stand up for herself and for others when it matters most — a quality that makes her not only an outstanding EMT, but an outstanding human being.

Congratulations, Tacara, and thank you for your years of service, dedication, and care for the communities we proudly serve. We are grateful to have you as part of the Star EMS family.

In this video, we show you a large secure area at Star EMS that without authorized access, nobody ever sees - until now!

Here's a fun little "informal infomercial" about what we do with patient care records and billing documents once the (very long) statutory retention period expires.

For billing records, that time (for us) is 10 years. For patient care records, we keep those a lot longer than most people probably realize (certain records we keep up to 26 years). That means, we have to keep all these boxes in a secure location, for a very long time. Space fills up quick - so we are happy to regain space after we shredded 90+ boxes - a small dent - but we will take it.

Some people may not know, but we also house and maintain the records for our fire department customers; the ones we provide billing services for. Yes, in addition to processing our own Star EMS claims, we also provide the billing functions and services for some area fire departments. If you've ever called the number on your invoice - and heard a friendly voice answer generically - "ambulance billing, how can I help you today" that's probably our folks in the Star EMS Billing Department, on behalf of the municipalities we serve or served in the past.

If you have any questions about how Star EMS handles your protected health information (PHI), please refer to our Notices of Privacy Practices (NPP) brochure that (if a patient) was mailed to your home, or provided at time of service.
