Free medications come with something just as valuable: a pharmacist who listens, explains, checks for possible interactions, and helps you stay on track.

October is American Pharmacists Month and Talk About Your Medicines Month. At Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic, eligible uninsured Michigan adults age 18 and older may receive no-cost prescription medications and pharmacist counseling, no insurance needed.

This is taking care of the whole person. Pharmacy support works alongside our medical, dental, optometry, and laboratory services, with dignity and respect at the center of every visit.

What if the first question at the front desk wasn’t, “Can you pay?”

What if no one asked you to prove your worth before offering care?

A patient once arrived at the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic expecting to be screened, judged, or talked down to, because that had happened before. Instead, they were welcomed as a person, by Maddy, our Patient Care and Front Desk Coordinator.

That moment matters.

At GBCHC, dignity comes first. No one should be made to feel small before they are cared for. Healthcare is a form of taking care, and it begins with listening, respect, and a simple welcome.

Thank you, Maddy, for being one of the first faces our community meets, and for making sure every person who walks through our doors is met with compassion, not suspicion. An eye exam shouldn’t be a luxury. Yet for too many adults in our community, vision care is something they quietly go without.

This World Sight Day, we’re shining a light on optometry: one of our four service lines. Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic provides no-cost eye exams, vision correction including glasses, and eye health screening for eligible uninsured Michigan adults age 18 and older.

Sometimes, taking care begins with simply listening.

This September, we’re highlighting Adam Schmitz, an optometry volunteer who chose GBCHC to work directly with underserved patients while exploring an interest in ophthalmology. Working alongside ophthalmic residents, performing diagnostic testing, and helping patients with limited access to eye care has been deeply meaningful.

But the moments that stay with him most are personal: getting to know patients, seeing them improve over time, and witnessing the resilience they show while navigating systemic barriers to care.

After one visit, a patient’s wife expressed her gratitude for taking the time to address his concerns and for “creating the medium for him to feel heard for the very first time.”

That is the power of compassionate care. It is also why volunteering at GBCHC offers such a meaningful view of medicine: you learn from knowledgeable doctors and nurses, serve patients from many backgrounds, and see how care can change a community.
