Your son landed awkwardly on the trampoline and is complaining of ankle pain.

You may have went a little too hard on the tennis or pickleball court and can’t lift your shoulder.

These are just a couple of examples that might require a trip to a St. Joseph’s/Candler Urgent Care. We have 10 across the region from Savannah to Pooler to Richmond Hill to Bluffton.

St. Joseph’s/Candler has athletic trainers to assist the providers who staff our urgent care locations with common orthopedic injuries such as sprains, strains, joint pain and even concussions.

These athletic trainers are located at our urgent cares in: Savannah, both Pooler locations (the SJ/C Pooler Campus and Canal Street), Richmond Hill (Highway 144) and Rincon.

See the link in the comments to learn how athletic trainers and nurse practitioners are working together at these locations.

Meet Robert Sizemore, nurse practitioner with St. Joseph’s/Candler Urgent Care in Richmond Hill. Robert has worked in urgent care since 2020 serving in Hinesville and Pooler, and now in Richmond Hill, which he is proud to call home.

Robert is responsible for taking care of patients of all ages who come through the door with colds, broken bones, bad sinuses and so much more.

Robert was also one of two nurses to be voted Best Nurse for Bryan County’s Best. How’s that for some bragging rights? Congratulations and well deserved recognition, Robert.

“I love that my job is close to home because this is my community. These are my people that I get to take care of. I love that I also get to see some of these people out in the community. They get to know my wife, my kids. It’s nice to have a sense of community from living here.

"More days than not, 75 percent of the people that are on the board to be seen I have treated before, and I know them by name. That’s from repeat visits, but also being here so long and living out in the community. That’s my favorite part of the job.

"Another thing too that I pride myself on is being really good at my job and knowing what I need to know and having the skill set to do such things. I think that’s nice to have close to home. I just like figuring out what’s wrong with people and helping them, which is another reason why I love my job so much.”

No outbreak has been reported in Savannah, but doubling down on washing produce and hands is always a good idea.

“Prevention is cleanliness,” emergency medicine specialist Dr. James R. Gill told WSAV News 3 On Your Side.

“It’s washing our hands as we prepare the food and then washing the fruits and vegetables that we consume, all of them, not just for cyclospora, but for all of the bugs that might contaminate us.”

A foodborne parasite that can cause someone to have “explosive” diarrhea, cramping and nausea.

Is your condition best addressed in an emergency department or an SJ/C Urgent Care?

Any patient that suspects they may be experiencing a possible medical emergency should call 911 immediately. While our Urgent Care staff is trained in basic life support, including respiratory support and AED use, our clinics are not a substitute for going to the nearest emergency room.

For more serious symptoms, such as chest pain or severe bleeding, the emergency room is best. Check out our helpful chart below to see which option is right for you.

It’s very likely that you will spend a lot of time outdoors this summer, despite the heat. We love our gardens, our beaches and family cookouts.

It’s also a possibility that you could suffer a common summertime wound. This is especially true for people with diabetes who’ve lost sensation in their feet or the elderly who have thinning skin.

When skin is broken or compromised by a bug bite, burn or cut, germs can enter the body. Open wounds, even a small bug bite, could become infected and cause serious complications.

Shandresa Moore worked as a nurse and nurse manager at the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Care at Candler Hospital for 14 years. She currently works in the St. Joseph's Hospital emergency department as she continues her education. Throughout her career, Moore has seen wounds increase in the summertime because we are outside more. Many can be prevented.

Follow these seven tips to try to prevent a wound:
👉 Wear protective clothing when outdoors
👉 Use bug spray
👉 Apply sun block regularly and limit sun exposure to prevent sunburns
👉 Wear appropriate shoes and try not to go barefoot on hot surfaces, including sandy beaches
👉 If you have a history of falls or dizziness be sure to have supportive equipment when walking around
👉 Consider derma savers, a padding-like material that can protect thin skin
👉 Check your legs and feet often for cuts and scrapes

“Especially if you have diabetes, you should look at your feet every day and make sure there are no sores,” Moore says. “If your feet tend to sweat from work shoes or any sock and shoe, and you don’t look at your feet every day, that moisture can invade the tissues and cause a laceration which can lead to a wound. If you are not paying attention it can get worse and worse and the next thing you know you have a gaping hole in the bottom of your foot or worse, need a toe amputated.”

Most bites and stings from bugs or spiders can be treated at home. But when should you seek treatment from a doctor, urgent care or visit an emergency department?

“When you should be worried and seek medical attention is when other symptoms start to develop – the site isn’t healing, pain is spreading, you get fever or chills," says Caitlin Young, a family nurse practitioner with St. Joseph’s/Candler Primary Care in Pooler.

Also, if the site of the bite starts to drain any yellowish fluids, you should seek medical care. There are antibiotics that can help rid the infection, Young says.
