We recently received notice that a migratory goose in our area tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), more commonly known as Bird Flu. Human infections with HPAI virus are rare. It has, however, resulted in outbreaks among commercial and backyard poultry flocks in 48 states. HPAI has been detected in 50 states or territories since February 2022.
Recommendations: AVOID EXPOSURE TO SICK OR DEAD ANIMALS If you are unable to avoid exposure, use respiratory and eye protection when dealing with sick or dead animals including wild birds, poultry, domesticated birds, other wild or domesticated animals as well as with animal f***s, litter or other materials contaminated by birds.
If you think you may have been exposed contact your local Public Health Department.
